National Children's Book Week
Estabrook is a reading community for sure! I've never seen so many students clutching books they have been immersed in reading - whether in the classroom or on the bus. I sometimes have to remind students not to read as they are walking down the stairs! We are fortunate to have a beautiful library stocked with a large and varied collection supplemented by classroom libraries rich with age-appropriate choices.
This week, Librarian Jen Kuhn heads up a week-long celebration of reading. Here are the highlights:
- "Read In" at All School Meeting: We begin Monday morning with a special Read-In. The entire school will gather as usual, but the first 10 minutes will be devoted to reading together.
- The Book Quiz: Each morning of the week, two book questions will be announced (1 for K-2 and 1 for Gr. 3-5). Classes will have the day to use books and resources to find the answer. Class prizes will be awarded!
- Read Aloud Day - Thursday, May 9: Our PTO sponsors this event in which each classroom has a special guest reader from the community.
This year marks the 100th anniversary of Children's Book Week. To learn more, go to: https://everychildareader.net/about/
"We must find time to stop and thank the people who make a difference in our lives.”
John F. Kennedy
During my year at Estabrook, I have been so impressed with the caring and commitment of the Estabrook staff, not to mention the high quality of instruction and the focus on student engagement and learning. What may not be as visible to parents is the reflective approach they bring to their work with a zeal for ongoing professional learning. Our PTO will be sponsoring a Staff Appreciation Luncheon on May 23 (which I am told is quite an affair!). And each month, room parents from a different grade level sponsor an appreciation breakfast for teachers. We appreciate being appreciated in this way!
This week, I encourage you to help your children learn the power of expressing gratitude by having them show their appreciation in some way. Teachers treasure hand-made cards, notes and pictures from their students. And the same is true for a card or email from a parent expressing appreciation and gratitude. Take time to thank the people who make a difference in your child's life.
