The Burruss Blast
A Message from the Principal
Happy New Year! What an exciting time to be back in school. We have jumped right back in with engaging instruction, meaningful conversations, and Winter MAP testing. This week, we are wrapping up testing and offering makeup sessions for students who were absent. You can expect to hear from your child's teacher regarding his/her progress and growth. Conference Week is very different this year than in years passed--it's no longer a week; rather, it is two days. Because of the shortened schedule, we will not be able to meet with every single family as we have traditionally done. You will hear from your child's teacher as s/he determines the need to meet. Please reach out to him/her directly if you would like to schedule a conference, even if you are not contacted by the teacher first. We want to support all students and families anytime! Not just during conference week!
At the end of this newsletter is a letter of guidance for when to send your child to school if s/he has been sick. We understand that this is a season of contagious illnesses and ask that you not send children who have been running a fever or throwing up. That said, we want all children here every day if they are well. Attendance notices are going out this month from myself and Mrs. Ethridge if your child has missed more than five days of school. Being at school is the most important first step for learning and growing!
Students and staff are working hard all day every day, learning and growing as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, and historians! Just as importantly, they are growing as citizens of our community, learning about being IB learners who are caring, inquiring, risk-takers, knowledgeable, open-minded, thinkers, communicators, reflective, and principled.
Please reach out to me or to my assistant principal, Mrs. Hartley-Lewis, if we can ever be of assistance!
Warm regards,
Dr. Jillian Johnson
Principal
Dismissal
If your child does not live within walking distance to the school, please plan to pick up your child in the carpool line. We do require you to show your child's QR code, which can be given by the front office and shown either on paper or on your cell phone. Our carpool line is very efficient and we finish the process by 3:25 on most days.
Transportation changes that ask for your child to be a walker toward Lee's Crossing or toward Kimberly Way may not be granted if you do not live in those communities. Student safety is our top priority.

Artist in Residence
This week, ALL students are enjoying the wheel pottery experience with our artist-in-residence Diane Quammen. Mrs. Quammen is a professional potter who specializes in functional stoneware. Her studio is in west Cobb County. Her presentation integrates math, science and ELA standards, as well as many visual arts standards! All students are enjoying the opportunity to learn about being a potter AND experience handling the spinning clay! Classes vote on shape, decoration and glaze colors of the piece they collectively make, which will be returned to them as a “class bowl” that they may keep in their room.
Many thanks to everyone who supported our Square 1 Art program and our PTA for partially funding this fun and educational opportunity for all of our students!
