Iowa Youth Survey & Gallup Poll
Iowa Youth Survey
The 2018 Iowa Youth Survey is directed by the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH). Your school system has agreed to administer the survey for 2018. The purpose of the survey is to collect information from Iowa youth so we can better understand their beliefs, values, and decisions about what makes them feel secure, strong, and safe in their communities, schools, and families. In addition, information is collected about their experiences with and ideas about alcohol, tobacco, drugs, bullying and harassment, and violence prevention. The information collected helps state planning agencies, schools, and local community task forces put together valuable future programming. It is important to ask children to tell us what is good and working about their lives in Iowa and what needs improvement.
“6th and 8th grade will be taking the Iowa Youth Survey the week of October 15th through October 19th. If you would like to see the survey they will be taking we will have a copy in the counseling office for you to look through. If you do not want your child to take the survey please contact the school at (319) 558-2452. Leave your child’s first and last name stating you do not want them to take the survey. You can also send an email to Sean Baylor, Associate Principal at sebaylor@cr.k12.ia.us. He will make sure the survey is not administered to your child.”
Gallup Survey Information
As part of the Safe, Equitable and Thriving (SET) Task Force, we have agreed to participate in the Gallup Student Survey. The web-based survey has 24 items that measure four elements, including engagement with school, hope for the future, entrepreneurship and career/financial literacy. The survey will take an average of 10 to 15 minutes to complete and is for 5th through 12th graders only. Students will complete the Gallup Poll from October 15-26.
- Engagement: The involvement in and enthusiasm for school. Engaged students are excited about what’s happening at their school and what they’re learning. Engaged students contribute to the learning environment, and they are psychologically committed to their school.
- Hope: The ideas and energy students have for the future. Hope has been linked to student success in school. Hopeful students are positive about the future, goal-oriented and can overcome obstacles in the learning process, enabling them to navigate a pathway to achieve their goals.
- Entrepreneurial Aspiration: The talent and energy for building businesses that survive, thrive and employ others. By identifying and nurturing students’ innate entrepreneurial talent, educators can empower the next generation of innovators to spur and sustain long-term economic energy.
- Career/Financial Literacy: The information, attitudes and behaviors that students need to practice for healthy participation in the economy. Wise economic choices can contribute to a thriving life.

Open Minds/Open Doors
Grant Wood AEA collaborated with the Association of University Women (AAUW) and Coe College to provide the annual Open Minds, Open Doors conference, a half-day conference intended to encourage middle school girls (7th-8th grades) to pursue career fields with foundations in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). We had 23 Franklin girls attend two hands-on workshops, and a "lunch and learn" rotation including the STEM Expo and an auditorium-style presentation. Presenters were professional working women who volunteer their time. Presenters represent a variety of careers and businesses in the Cedar Rapids-Iowa City corridor.
Mix It Up Day
Mix It Up at Lunch Day is an international campaign that encourages students to identify, question and cross social boundaries. Franklin will participate in Mix It Up Day on Tuesday, October 23.
Hy-Vee Receipts & Box Tops
We would appreciate your support in our collection of Box Tops for Education and Hy-Vee Receipts. There are collection bins in our main office and can be dropped off at any time. Later in the year we will hold Homeroom competitions for the receipts. Annually, we have amazing support for our families that comes back to benefit our students.
