Fun Run News

Our Fun Run was a huge success! The weather was wonderful, and we loved seeing so many parents participating and making it so much fun. Donation envelopes are coming home today with a wrist band. The band is marked with tallies showing all the laps run. Thank-you for supporting our PTO and school in this way! Don't want to worry about checks and envelopes? Click here:

Reading News

Third graders use Scholastic News magazine every week as a way to teach non-fiction reading skills. This week we read about a new species of frog found in the rain forest. The children learned about parts of non-fiction text such as subheadings and captions and their uses. We also practiced making sense of comprehension questions and writing answers in complete sentences. This is a critical skill for third graders, and new to many children.

Writing News

Students have written different types of entries this week so we can get a baseline on their writing skills. Students wrote an opinion piece and a personal narrative. We have also begun to assess spelling skills with word wall words.

Math News

Place value concepts have been the focus this week. The children have practiced writing numbers using expanded form, written form, and standard form. We practiced addition and subtraction facts while in the computer lab on Tuesday, as well.

Science News

Our little scientists completed their first hands-on lab experiment this week. They had a lot of fun exploring bubbles! We tested how long our bubbles would stay alive. Students are learning about the scientific method through a variety of labs over the next couple of weeks. Students are practicing making hypotheses, following procedures, collecting data, recording observations and drawing conclusions.

S.S. News

We are looking at the 4 different types of social scientists. So far, we have examined a geographer, economist and historian. We are recording our thinking in a Social Scientist Notebook and drawing a picture that will help remind us of each individual social scientist. Ask your child to tell you what picture he/she drew for each!

Technology News

During our lab time Tuesday afternoon the children had fun practicing their math facts with some of the websites linked on our site. Students could challenge each other with rapid recall of addition and subtraction facts. Ask your child to show you how the games are played- but be careful, they are addictive. The children begged to practice more!
