NJMS Media Center Happenings
Some Highlights from the 2013-2014 School Year
Book Fair Success!
The NJMS Book Fair was held September 23rd through September 27th. Throughout the week 24 sixth through eighth grade language arts classes, including approximately 640 students, visited the fair. Students were able to browse, create wishlists and purchase new books and other fun items. The Book Fair encouraged READING for all students and their families! Mrs. Pettigrew wishes to thank all of the parents, students and NJMS staff for their support of this successful fundraiser for our media center.

Ticket to Reading Rewards
NJMS partnered with an exciting, effective reading motivational program for the 2013-14 school year,Ticket to Reading Rewards. TICKET is a program of the National Association of Basketball Coaches Foundation (the men's basketball coaches in collaboration with national business leaders). The program is for Middle School students only (grades 6-8) and is the leading reading motivational program in the country for Middle School students.
TICKET was created in Chicago in 2002 by Arne Duncan (now U.S. Secretary of Education) at Chicago Public Schools, with the aid of the NABC Foundation. Results in Chicago have shown students can gain nearly an extra grade level in reading by participating in the program. The TICKET website is www.tickettoreadingrewards.org.
Equally important, TICKET was a fun, motivational program that used the connection with college basketball to challenge students to read up to 25 books outside the classroom. Rewards were achieved for each 5 books read and included: silicone wristbands, cinch bags, reading medals, mini hoop-backboard-ball sets, water bottles, watches, and ice cream.
The TOP READING STUDENT at NJMS, 7th grader Cecile Narron, received a special trophy from TICKET and the NABC Foundation.
