Sherburn Hungate Weekly News - Spring Term - Issue 7

Big picture

A word from Mr Broom

Our final week of the half term is now over and we're all looking forward to a rest and some much needed family time. I hope you are too. The forecast for the week seems ok at the moment and there's going to be lots of opportunities to get out and about.

It's been another busy week:

- Our Y5/6 girls competed in the inter-schools football championships on Thursday, finishing 2nd; a super achievement.

- On Tuesday, the whole school took part in our Mindfulness Day which was a huge success. The children and staff took time to learn and think about how our brains work to complete tasks. There was a focus on calmness and deep thinking and it was great to come away from the rigours of the curriculum if only for a short period.

- Martyn Sibley (STARMAT CEO) and Melissa Boyes (STARMAT CFO) visited our governors for their meeting on Wednesday evening. It was a great opportunity to share with them all the hard work we are doing behind the scenes to help Sherburn Hungate continue to thrive and, of course, grow.

Whatever you get up to over the coming week, stay safe, enjoy yourselves and we'll see you back in school on Monday 4th March.

Snaps from the week!

A Warm Welcome to Mrs Sowden

I am delighted to inform you that Mrs Helen Sowden will be joining our teaching team in Year 6 after the holidays. Mrs Sowden is our latest permanent teacher appointment and will take up a post with Year 6 to support them and Miss Mackay for the remainder of this academic year. She is an experienced teacher who brings a wide ranging skillset that will only add to and strengthen the quality of teaching across school.

Welcome to Sherburn Hungate Helen.

World Book Day - A Special Challenge

To celebrate World Book Day, we are going to host a competition for the children to design a new front cover for their favourite book. The winners will be judged in the following categories:

- Early Years (Nursery/Reception) - These children might want to paint/draw a character from their favourite book.

- Key Stage 1 (Year 1/2)

- Lower Key Stage 2 (Year 3/4)

- Upper Key Stage 2 (Year 5/6)

Below is a template for a book cover that you might want to use. Good luck everyone!

The Sherburn Hungate Garden Project - It's Competition Time

As you will be aware, the Osgoldcross & Elmet Rotary Club have been working incredibly hard to turn our school garden into a working place for our children to enjoy and learn in. It's progressing very well thanks to the hard work of volunteers and we're now looking to name the new garden.

We're looking to our children to name this new garden and the Rotary Club are hosting a competition to do just that. If you'd like to get involved over the holidays, click on the terms and entry form files below. The the best of luck to all our competition entries.

School Attendance

It's important that children attend school regularly and at Sherburn Hungate we recognise that excellent attendance leads to excellent achievement. Fact!

Our attendance for this week is 94.4%, which is well short of our 96% target. Let's hope that next week we'll meet it together.

We know that there's lots of bugs around because we've had staff illness too. However, please help us by sending your children to school when they only have sniffles. If they're not well enough to be here, we will send them home.

Our top attending class this week is Year 4 with 97.9%

Red Nose Day - Friday 15th March

Red Nose Day this year is on Friday 15th March and to support this, we will be having a fancy dress/non-uniform day in school. Minimum donations of £1 can be made on ParentPay.

Co-Op Raffle Tickets

You may or may not be aware that some of our very talented children have made it into the national finals of the schools cross-country championships which will be held at Dalby Forest in the coming months.

The Co-op have very kindly offered to support these children by hosting a raffle so that we can buy them official championship hoodies. If you would like to support them, please visit the store over the weekend and purchase a raffle ticket.
