Springville Families,

What a beautiful and cold fall weekend! We have just completed our 6th week of school and teachers are enjoying working with your students each day, even though the school experience is different than what we are all used to. From morning meeting to reading workshop to PE/Music, students and teachers are connecting. Connection is one of the most challenging and also most important parts of distance learning.

In addition to connecting through Zoom meetings, teachers are gathering information to help guide both teaching and learning by looking at student work on Seesaw and Canvas daily. They are keeping tabs on progress by looking at students’ responses to assignments and activities. Although they may not provide a comment on each, they are reviewing them and taking note of student progress.

It is important for us to know how things are going on your end as well. Please click the link below to access a form where you can let us know what is going well and where we can improve. We appreciate your feedback as we try to make CDL the best experience possible for students and families. Also feel free to contact us by phone or email with any questions or concerns you may have. We are truly in this together and are grateful for your partnership.

Chromebook Swap - Grade 3-8 Only

If your student picked up a Chromebook last year and would like a new device to use for remote learning, we will have a Chromebook swap this Wednesday from 9:00-12:00 in the parent parking lot in the front of the school. Please come at the following times, based on your last name:
  • A-J 9:00-10:00
  • K-R 10:00-11:00
  • S-Z 11:00-12:00

If the times above don't work for your family, come when you can. Also:
  • Before you come, write your student's first and last name, grade level and student number on a piece of paper to show to our staff
  • Return the old Chromebook and charger
  • This is a drive-through event only; please stay in your car

If you can't make it on Wednesday and you would still like to swap out your device, our building tech team will be available at the office entrance on the bus/staff parking lot side of the school each Tuesday from 11:00-12:30 to help. You do not have to email or call ahead.

Ms. B's Book Talk

This week, come and pick up a copy of Holes, by Louis Sachar, a book that won the 1999 Newbery Medal for the year's "most distinguished contribution to American literature for children.” This is the story of Stanley Yelnats (did you notice that his last name is his first name spelled backwards)? Stanley is falsely accused of stealing and sent to a detention center called camp Green Lake. There, he overcomes many challenges, solves a mystery, makes a best friend and discovers the strength of his own character. It is an adventure from start to finish. I could not put it down. I also watched the movie based on the book; I enjoyed the book more. Which one will you like more?

Parking Lot Safety

During CDL, we love to see students taking walks, riding bikes and playing with family outside. We do ask that students not ride bikes in the staff parking lot during school hours. Staff are often coming and going throughout the day and it can be unsafe when students ride through as cars are backing out.

Classroom Book Pick-Up

We are so happy many of you are able to pick-up books for your children at school. The Classroom Book Bag Wednesday pick-up moved indoors last week and parents were able to walk up to the staff doors to return and request a book bag.

We are expanding our service to include 2nd grade EVERY WEEK. So, starting on Wednesday, Oct. 28th, Kindergarten 1st and 2nd can come every week for fresh books if you need them. Please don't forget to count the number of books you are returning and make sure it matches what it says on the bag. We are trying hard to make sure your child gets different books each week that are matched closely to their reading level.

Here is the Classroom Book Bag Pick-up Schedule for the next several weeks:

October 28: K, 1, 2, *4 & *6

November 4: K, 1, 2, 3, *5

November 11: No School - Veteran's Day Holiday

Nurse News - Screen Time Tips

Do you have concerns about the amount of screen time your child is accessing each day during comprehensive distance learning? New guidelines issued this year by the American Academy of Pediatrics recognizes, especially with distance learning, that screen time can be useful and beneficial if balanced with non-screen time.

When deciding how to develop your family’s screen time plan outside of distance learning it’s important to keep these tips in mind (Morin, 2020):

  1. Modeling healthy limits and behaviors with screens is important. Create family non-screen times such as during meals, 30-60 minutes before bed, or other family times.
  2. Make a point to engage in non-screen activities together such as reading, exercising, talking to each other, or playing games.
  3. Engage with your child and their technology by asking questions about what they’re doing, why they enjoy it, what they’re learning, or maybe participate together in the electronic activity or game.
  4. Media and content online can be positive and negative, use parental controls and know what your child is watching so that your child has a positive experience.
  5. Create reasonable time limits for screen time as a family by encouraging your child to help determine how much screen time is enough, then stick to it.
  6. Try not to let your children have unlimited screen time over the weekends or school breaks, continue to stick to your screen time plan even during unstructured times.

Talented and Gifted (TAG) Services

Every year students are considered for Talented and Gifted services in the Beaverton School District. These services are provided by your child's classroom teacher(s). Oregon law and District policy define gifted students as those who score at or above the 97th percentile on a standardized, nationally normed test of mental ability and/or academic achievement in reading and/or math. Behavioral, learning, and/or performance information is also considered before a student is identified for TAG services.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and our current reality of Comprehensive Distance Learning, our evaluation process will look different this year. We will administer in-person TAG testing after January 11, 2021. Until then, teachers will collect evidence on how your student responds to differentiation within their distance learning classroom. This evaluation may include: file reviews, teacher and student observations, a collection of work samples, and/or individual or group assessments. This process may take some time, but every effort will be made to complete the evaluation in a timely manner. Parents will be notified of their school’s in-person testing dates in January

If you think your child might qualify for TAG services, you may wish to complete the Parent Information Form that is linked here. Completing this form gives our school TAG Committee more information about your child, but it is not required. While completing this form does not guarantee that your child will be tested, it will give our school’s TAG committee valuable additional information in the nomination process. All qualified students will be considered regardless of the form’s completion. Please complete and email the Parent Information Form to your child’s teacher by November 6th.

Springville Counseling Office Hours

Starting next week, the Springville Counselors are available for Office Hours for students, families & teachers on Monday & Friday 11am-12pm every week (other days by appointment).

During office hours meetings will occur on a first come, first serve basis. If you enter the waiting room and are unable to connect with the counselor during that hour, please email us and we will schedule a time to connect with you about your question or concern. Thank you for your understanding and we look forward to working with you this school year.

Child Care Subsidy Available

Washington County has secured a grant through the federal CARES Act to provide child care subsidies to parents/guardians. The Beaverton School District will be distributing approximately $2.4 million to families who are eligible and apply for these subsidies. In other words, if you pay for child care, you could be eligible to receive money to help cover some or all of your out-of-pocket expenses.

The District will be opening the application window on October 28, 2020. If you don't have internet access, you can pick up a paper application at your school or the District Office (16550 SW Merlo Drive, Beaverton). If you have questions, email child-care-subsidy@beaverton.k12.or.us.

As you prepare to apply, we suggest that you gather the required information to include with your application. The funds will be distributed until they are gone. It is in your best interest to apply earlier.

Community Survey on Possible Limited In-Person Instruction or Hybrid Model

As the District announced on October 19, we plan to continue Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL) for grades Pre-K-12 at least until the end of the first semester.

As we look at various models, it’s important that we have a sense of how many students would participate in Limited In-Person Instruction (LIPI) prior to the end of the first semester (if offered), how many students would return in a Hybrid Model in the second semester (if offered), and how many students would elect to continue in CDL. As a reminder, the District has guaranteed access to CDL for the entire 2020-21 school year.

Please know that in a LIPI or Hybrid Model, the District would follow all state-required safety protocols including face coverings for all staff and students, social distancing of six feet and reduced classroom capacity to ensure 35 square feet per child. Also, please know that regardless of your choice, Nutrition Services will continue to serve meals to all students — whether in Hybrid or CDL.

Grab & Go Meal Service

The start of school is right around the corner, and our Nutrition Services department has been hard at work developing a plan for providing meals during Comprehensive Distance Learning (CDL). We have just received waivers from the USDA which allow any child (age 1-18) to pick up free meals through December 31, 2020.

Here’s a look at how meals will be distributed this fall:

  • Parents or guardians may pick up meals for students who are not present.

  • Meal pickups will occur two days per week: Tuesday (2 days of food) and Thursday (3 days of food) from 11 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.

  • Meals will be packaged with breakfast and lunch together.

  • Masks must be worn by anyone picking up meals.

2020-2021 District Calendar

The 2020-21 District Calendar has been updated.

The calendar is subject to change based on contract negotiations and resource availability. In the event inclement weather or other emergency closures prevent the District from meeting required instructional hours set by ODE, the days will be made up in June.
