Compass Family Update

This Week's News:

  • Today we welcomed two new staff members! Kirsten, our Sustainability Coordinator, and Elizabeth, our Learning Support Coordinator had their first day of work with Compass. We spent some time reviewing the mission statement and discussing our own recent learning experiences. Kirsten and Elizabeth will be working with us at the NYC Charter School Center until we move into the school building in early August.
  • We have a t-shirt vendor! Short-sleeved shirts will be $5 and long-sleeved shirts will be $8. There are many color options to choose from. Todd will be in touch soon about ordering.
  • Brooke's brother, Daniel, is volunteering this week as a high school intern. He is helping with thank you notes for donations, copies, and picking up donations through Materials for the Arts.

July Family Gathering

Join us for a playdate in Underwood Park!


You are invited to the third Family Gathering for our founding group of students, families, staff, and Board of Trustees on July 26th from 1PM-4 PM. This event is for your entire family and will be another great opportunity to begin building our community with one another. Our last two gatherings have been wonderful and full of fun.


We will chat, play on the playground, and enjoy the (hopefully mild) summer weather!


You can choose to bring additional outdoor toys or sporting equipment to help facilitate our play.


Here are some suggestions for things to bring or wear:

  • Outdoor toys
  • Bubbles
  • Balls
  • Your own snacks and drinks
  • Anything else you like to play with outside

We are so appreciative of all of your help with our Donors Choose projects. We had another project funded this week that will provide us with the initial materials for our Sustainability Studio.


Our Giving Page is back up and running and we have one project posted. This project is to help outfit all of our classrooms with math materials and manipulatives. Please share this page with your friends and family. We have also had a lot of success with sharing with our own networks on Facebook and Twitter. The link is below.

Start Up Committees: Info and Date Changes

Please note the dates and times for the following committees. Some dates have changed.


Welcome Event Committee: July 22nd, 6pm

Recycling Committee: July 23rd, 4pm

Snack Committee: Rescheduled for early August

Living Things Committee: Rescheduled for early August

Grants and Fundraising Committee: July 24th, 6pm


All of these meetings will be held at the NYC Charter School Center at 111 Broadway, Suite 604 near Wall Street in Manhattan. Please bring a photo ID to enter the building. We apologize for the trek, but we have not yet moved into the school building.

Afterschool Survey: Please complete as soon as possible

Thank you to all of the families who have completed the Afterschool Needs survey. If you have not yet completed the survey, please do so by the end of the week. This information will help us to be as prepared as possible with our partnership with the YMCA.

School Food: Please complete as soon as possible

Compass has now been added to the Department of Education's School Food program.


The Department of Education asks that all families enter in their information, even if they do not intend to eat school food. Certain state funding depends on having ALL FAMILIES fill out this information. We need everyone to apply for School Food even if you do not intend to use it for your child.


Please click the link and complete the information as soon as possible as this will impact our funding. Please make sure to choose Compass Charter School 84K789.
