2015 in Review - 2016 Preview
2015 in Review
We began 2015 by welcoming Jesper Romell as our new CEO. Jesper had served as our COO throughout 2014 and has more than 20 years of sales and operations expertise in the distribution of electronic components and technology products and in providing supply chain services.
EMEA Sales, Purchasing, Inspection, and Distribution
While we had spent the past few years growing and improving our operations in the Americas and APAC regions, we focused much of our efforts in 2015 on doing the same in the EMEA region. In addition to our pre-existing office in France, we opened offices in Sweden, England, The Netherlands, and Italy.
We opened our Amsterdam Inspection and Distribution Center (IDC) in January, with similar capabilities as our Austin and Singapore IDCs – allowing us to deliver the same high-quality product even more quickly than before.
In May, we hired an engineer to oversee our quality globally. Rocel comes to Velocity with years of experience in component manufacturing and distribution.
We added in-house solderability testing in our Austin IDC in July, eliminating the need to spend time sending components for third party testing.
In November, our IDCs in Austin and Amsterdam earned their AS6081 certifications, certifying we have the tools and processes in place to protect our customers from counterfeit components. Our Singapore IDC uses the same processes as our other IDCs and is fully compliant to AS6081.
Jason Jowers (our Director of Quality and Operations) serves on the AS6081A development committee – writing the next version of this standard.
AS9120 and ANSI/ESD S20.20Our Amsterdam IDC earned its AS9120 and ANSI/ESD S20.20 certifications in November, joining our IDCs in Austin and Singapore in having a third-party confirm we utilize best practices for quality management and for protecting product from damage caused by ESD.
Third Party Inspections
We are now providing third party inspection services to our customers – inspecting product they procure from other sources. We provided this service to several customers in 2015 – one that had us inspect approximately 50 orders a day and others that had us inspect their entire inventories of product. Please contact us if you are interested in having us provide you with the assurance that product purchased from other sources is of the highest quality.
We are planning on adding the following inspection capabilities in our Amsterdam IDC to better serve our high-reliability customers in EMEA – heated solvent testing, solderability testing, and SEM.
ISO 17025 and AS6171
We are working towards becoming certified to the ISO 17025 test lab certification, using the AS6171 inspection processes as our inspection processes – providing an extra level of assurance that our inspection procedures are conducted in the strictest manner and to the highest standard.
We are in the process of becoming certified to ISO 14001 in our Amsterdam IDC – certifying we are operating in an environmentally friendly manner. Our Austin IDC is already certified to this standard.
Business Continuity Plan
We are revising our BCP to ensure we are able to serve our customers even if we are faced with an event that would normally interrupt business.
Lean Six Sigma
Several of our managers are planning on earning Lean Six Sigma certification and using those principles to further improve our efficiency and quality.
Business Management SystemWe will continue to improve our AS9120 certified BMS by refining the KPIs and process metrics we use to identify opportunities for improvement.
