California Reading and Literature Project @ Fresno State
Challenge 7-12 Students with Critical Text and Integrated Literacy Support: Content Area Language and Literacy Open Institute (CALL)
The CA CCSS for ELA/Literacy and CA ELD standards require an integrated, interdisciplinary model of literacy that reflects the reciprocal relationship between the language arts and content knowledge (CA ELA/ELD Framework, 2014).
CALL offers middle and high school content teachers a practical planning process and research-based instructional routines to scaffold students’ comprehension of complex text and academic language development across content areas. The end goal is for students to independently comprehend complex texts across a range of types and disciplines in order to build strong content knowledge.
CRLP Signature Professional Learning Programs meets criteria for professional learning in LCFF, and ESEA’s High-Quality Professional Development for Title I, III, V and VII, Part A; and for Title II, Part A and B.
Workshop Outcomes:
- Understand the broad literacy necessary to prepare students for college, careers, and civic life of the 21st century.
- Learn to implement instructional strategies and routines to make complex text accessible to all students.
- Use backward design to plan a variety of instructional tasks across curriculum.
- Learn strategies for differentiation to facilitate access specifically for English learners (Integrated ELD)
- Learn strategies to build into and from content instruction to develop the academic English language that English learners need for content learning in English (Designated ELD)
