What is Balanced Literacy?
The ELA model that Richland 2 follows is a balanced literacy model, but what does that actually look like in the classroom? In a nutshell, it means that all ELA domains (reading, writing, listening, viewing and speaking) are addressed. It also means that there is time to work on foundational skills like phonemic awareness, phonics and fluency, especially in the early grades while still addressing the vocabulary and comprehension needs of our readers. In the upper grades, the foundational skills focus shifts to more word work involving roots, bases, and affixes. At Center For Knowledge/Center For Knowledge North, we also spend time integrating Core Knowledge topics from science and social studies into the daily routine of ELA. The comprehension component of a balanced literacy approach also supports the Core Knowledge emphasis on classic literature and critical thinking in the ELA curriculum. Both the Balanced Literacy model that our district has adopted and the Core Knowledge curriculum that is central to CFK/CFKN come together to create an accelerated curriculum that provides the challenging work our students need to grow as independent readers, writers and thinkers.
Late Arrival Procedures
Please be reminded that instruction time begins at 8:00 am.
When arriving at school after 8:00 am and no adult is on duty in the carpool loop, please park your vehicle and walk your child into the front office. This is for your child's supervision and safety. Thank you in advance for your support in this matter!
- Tardies begin at 8:10am. An adult will need to sign the student in at this time.
Excessive tardies will be reviewed under the choice option for attendance to a magnet program.
Uniform Guidelines
Monday through Thursday, students wear solid burgundy, navy, or white shirts with any school-appropriate insignia that is smaller than 2” in size, with khaki or navy shorts or slacks, skirts/skorts or jumpers. Tops and pants should not contain patterns including, but not limited to stripes, polka dots, plaid, etc. Fingertip length for shorts and skirts is required. Students may wear the CFK/CFKN logo on t-shirts or sweatshirts. During the winter months, students may wear navy sweatpants with burgundy, white, or navy sweatshirts. In the classroom any outerwear worn must be uniform. Friday is a free choice dress day. If Friday is a school holiday, Thursday does not become a non-uniform day. If a student is out of uniform, their parents will be called and required to bring a change of clothing. Students may wear our approved plaid as part of their uniform. The plaid is called “Clear Blue Plaid”, and can only be purchased through Lands’ End – no other plaids are acceptable. The items available in this plaid are skirts, skorts, jumpers, belts, ties and headbands. This is completely optional and simply provides another uniform choice.
Spaghetti strap, halters and midriff shirts may not be worn at any time. Straps must be at least two fingers wide.
Rubber flip-flops (shower/beach type) may not be worn at any time.
