The Mata Memo
April 4, 2023
Principal's Message
Dear Mata family,
We hope that you've had a wonderful week, and are looking forward to the upcoming 4-day weekend.
We are continuing to share information of how to make yourself dispensable in your child's life. Each one will help you move closer to your goal of raising an independent, autonomous, fully functioning young adult.
Check out this week's focus:
Use Parent Talk that supports your belief that children can do for themselves. Watch out for
language that promotes learned helplessness. Examples include:
“Here, let me do that for you.”
“I’ll pay for it this time, but if it happens again, you’ll have to pay for it.”
“I’ll talk to your teacher for you and see if I can get her to change her mind.”
“It’s late so I’ll let it go this time.”
“I’ll fix it for you.”
“It was raining so I put your bike in the garage.”
This style of language is a clue that you could be over functioning and making yourself indispensable.
Consider rephrasing:
"Let me see you do it."
"You will show responsibility by paying for it."
"You should talk to your teacher and share your concern."
"You can do this yourself"
"It's raining, grab an umbrella and place your bike in the garage, so that it doesn't get ruined."
What other statements can you think of?
Together we will give our children the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence!
Enjoy the Memo below!
Sincerely,
Tomeka Williams

After School Carpool Reminders
All cars will proceed down LaVista Dr. to the furthest entry past the school building. You will make a right turn into the drive nearest the apartments. You will remain in your car and show your sign to the Mata staff. We will call for your child as you drive around the wraparound drive. Please pull up as far as possible. Keep your child's tag showing until your child(ren) is brought to your car. When leaving the drive, turn left to circle under the bridge and proceed to the traffic light.
Please do not park in the NO Parking Zones, as this is a safety concern, and you can be ticketed.
Also, please do not walk through the lanes of the carpool. Please use the sidewalks when walking.
Thank you for your cooperation in keeping our students safe.
