BOARD OF EDUCATION UPDATE
The Spring Election has brought a few changes to the Lake Country School Board of Education. Al Larson's term is up, and Matt Sherman will take office on April 24. Please join us in thanking Al Larson for his years of service to our district. His dedication to supporting staff and students was very much appreciated, and we will miss having Al at our board meetings. Thank you Al!
GRADE 7 TREE PLANTING
Last week 7th graders planted hundreds of seedlings donated by the Wisconsin DNR to rejuvenate our school forest. Wisconsin's reforestation program grows high-quality native tree seedlings and shrubs to plant on private and public lands for conservation. The stock provides future forest products, improves wildlife habitat, prevents soil erosion, creates aesthetic beauty, and increases carbon sequestration. Just in time for Earth Day 2023!
INVEST IN OUR PLANET - EARTH DAY 2023

FORWARD EXAM TESTING
Lake Country School’s testing window runs from April 5-28. Classroom teachers will publish the specific dates they will be testing. Please notify your child’s teacher as soon as possible if your child has a planned absence(s) or an appointment that cannot be rescheduled during this timeframe.
Please make a concerted effort to have your child at school on these dates. All testing needs to be completed and submitted to the testing company by April 28. If your child is absent during the testing period, a make-up opportunity will be scheduled which will require your child to be pulled out of class. You can help your child do well on the tests by:
Making certain that your child is in attendance during the classroom testing times
Encouraging your child to give his/her best effort
Ensuring your child gets a good night’s rest prior to testing
Having your child eat a nutritious breakfast
Ensuring your child has the necessary materials for testing (charged Chromebook & wired headphones/earbuds)
For more information about the test, please read the Forward Exam for Families.
Scores from the Forward Exam are reported in the proficiency categories of “Advanced”, “Proficient,” “Basic,” and “Below Basic” based on score ranges established by the State Superintendent of Public Instruction. The Forward Exam results will be communicated to parents. If you have any questions or concerns about your child’s participation in the 2023 Forward Exam, please contact your child’s teacher or Debby Schneider at x126.
CONGRATULATIONS TO THE KNACK
The Knack consists of 7 high school students, hosted by Lake Country School District (a K-8 school). The Team participates in a program called "FIRST Tech Challenge." Each year, the team designs and builds a robot to compete in the season's game, learning science, engineering, technology and communication skills. Each year, the team also hosts and participates in multiple outreach events, hosts a 24-Team FTC state qualifying competition, mentors new FIRST teams, holds free STEM camps, promotes FIRST programs and learns about STEM careers.
This year, The Knack, won the Inspire Award (the top FTC award) and was on the winning robot alliance at the WI State FTC Championship, earning a spot at the World Championship on April 18-22 in Houston, Texas.
The team is self-funded and needs your support to help cover their travel expenses. The team has already covered the $2000 registration fee for the competition and the full season costs. The Worlds travel costs will include flights, 4 nights of hotel, and van rental for 7 team members and 4 coaches. This is estimated to cost about $10,000.
Any help would be greatly appreciated! This trip is the culmination of countless hours, days, months, and years of work and sacrifice by our students, volunteer coaches and mentors, and parents. Thank you for your consideration!

Between preparing healthy food, adhering to strict nutrition standards, navigating student food allergies, and offering service with a smile, Lake Country School nutrition professionals have a lot on their plate. To celebrate their hard work and commitment, Lake Country School will celebrate School Lunch Hero Day on May 5. This day, celebrated annually since 2013, was designated by Jarrett Krosoczka, author of the “Lunch Lady” graphic novel series and The School Nutrition Association. School Lunch Hero Day provides an opportunity for parents, students, school staff and communities to thank those who provide healthy meals to nearly 30 million of America’s students each school day.
Federal nutrition standards ensure that school cafeterias always offer low-fat or fat-free milk, fruits, vegetables, whole grains and lean protein. School meals also meet limits on calories, sodium and unhealthy fats. The importance and nutritional value of school meals are well documented. For many children, school lunch is the most important and nutrient-rich meal of their day.
Get the details about School Lunch Hero Day at www.schoollunchheroday.com.

Safety Drills
In order to maintain a safe environment for our children to study and learn, it is necessary that we practice our emergency response plans by having drills designed to exercise our procedures.
FIRE DRILLS
The school has conducted a “fire drill” each month. This is a requirement for all Wisconsin public schools. We want each student to understand and be aware of the importance of this drill and not be afraid when the fire alarm is sounded. By practicing they will know what to do and how to do it.
TORNADO DRILLS
The purpose of this drill is to be prepared to move to a safe location within the building in case of severe weather or tornados. Lake Country School conducted a “tornado drill” in September, and in October our location received a tornado warning and our students and staff took shelter. As Wisconsin looks ahead to spring weather, Wisconsin Emergency Management and its partners at the National Weather Service want people to be ready for the possibility of tornadoes and severe storms. As part of those preparations, everyone in the state is encouraged to participate in statewide tornado drills scheduled for April 20 at 1:45 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. The annual drills will take place during Tornado and Severe Weather Awareness Week, which is April 17-21. Lake Country School will conduct our final tornado drill for the school year on April 20.
EMERGENCY LOCKDOWN IN CASE OF A SCHOOL SAFETY INCIDENT
The school will conduct a “Lockdown Drill” later this month. This type of drill will secure the school building and safely shelter all students, staff, and visitors inside the building. The purpose of this drill is to keep the students safe from any danger outside or inside the building. To enable everyone to remain safe, no one will be allowed to enter the building or leave the building until the drill is completed.
EVACUATION DRILLS IN CASE OF SCHOOL SAFETY INCIDENT
The school will conduct an “Evacuation Drill'' this school year. Students will be safely escorted along a designated evacuation route to one of our predetermined evacuation locations or sites. This is a requirement for all Wisconsin public schools. At the conclusion of the drill, all students will be escorted back to the school.
Over the course of the year we will be collaborating with first responders and law enforcement to ensure that Lake Country School is a safe place to learn and work.
LAKE COUNTRY SCHOOL PTO
Lake Country PTO is a nonprofit parent teacher organization whose membership includes all staff, parents, and legal guardians of students attending Lake Country School. The PTO’s mission is to establish a close relationship between home and school by advancing opportunities for all parents to become involved in the Lake Country School community.
The PTO sponsors assistance to teachers in classroom settings, raises funds for supplemental educational materials and experiences, supports school and family social interaction, and provides a forum for sharing information on issues that impact our children.
