The Largest Estuary in North Carolina
It is approximate 80 miles long and 15-20 miles wide.
The Importance of Estuaries
-Brings in nutrients from the surrounding watershed
-Act as buffer zones( stabilize shorelines and protect coastal areas, inland habitats and human communities from floods and storm surges from hurricanes)
-Also protect streams, river channels and coastal shores from excessive erosion caused by wind, water and ice
-Fish (red drum, flounders, etc)
