A Note from Ms. Ellison

Dear Glen Grove Community,

As we approach the Thanksgiving holiday, I think it is important for us all to take a moment and reflect on everything for which we are grateful. I know I am beyond grateful for your children and all of the energy, positivity, and optimism they bring to us each and every day. I am also incredibly thankful for our families for all you do to support our school and your child. Finally, I am grateful for the staff at Glen Grove. We all know that it has not been an easy journey in education lately and our staff show up each and every day committed to centering children.

We are excited about the work of our Glen Grove Community Culture team. These teachers have organized resources and partnered with families to share the many celebrations and traditions of our Glen Grove community. Please make sure to check out these resources in each of our newsletters.

We have had some families inquire about homework recently. While there are many differing opinions, research, and ideas about homework in the educational world, one thing that we know for certain is that if homework is assigned it is designed to be repeated practice and not new learning or contributing to a grade. If your family would prefer additional academic work at home, I would encourage you to set routines with additional IXL minutes and independent reading.

Finally, just a reminder to send your child with a water bottle each day to school. We are only using the filling station part of the drinking fountains, so it is important that students have reusable water bottles each day.

As always, do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, comments, or concerns.

Happy Friday!

Kate Ellison

From the Nurse's Office

If you need any help or support during this difficult time of the pandemic, please do not hesitate to call Jennifer Hastings, RN, our Health Coordinator, at (847) 657-2394.

All student absences should be called into the health office no later than 7:45 a.m. at (847) 657-2394. The school has voicemail so parents can call the health office to leave messages at any time.

If your children come to school after 7:45 a.m. please have them come through the front office. This is for the safety of all of our students.

Water bottles!

We are handing out A LOT of water cups to students who forget their water bottles. This takes time away from their studies. And as much as we enjoy seeing your children, it interrupts the work of the office staff.

Please make sure that your child brings a water bottle to school every day!

Glen Grove Community Culture Team

The purpose of the Glen Grove Community Culture Team is to celebrate our diversity and recognize all the different kinds of celebrations and traditions our families celebrate. The team meets monthly to talk about how we can share our Glen Grove families' celebrations and traditions. Today they'd like to highlight Diwali!
Big picture
Families celebrate by lighting diyas, placing offerings to Lakshmi for happiness and prosperity, lighting sparklers, making Rangoli (decorated with colored rice), eating Indian sweets, praying, and dancing the Garba.

Reminder for 4th and 5th Graders

The last day to register for Battle of the Books (BOB), a Glenview Public Library program, is Wednesday, November 17th. Parents, please register your child using the online form: Paper copies of the registration form are also available at the Youth Service at the library. Each student must register separately. Please include the names of all team members—as well as the team name—when registering. Teams should be complete at time of registration. Ideally, each team should have 4 members, but teams of 3 are also acceptable. Mrs. Duby and Glenview Public Library staff are happy to help interested students find teams. The Orientation Meeting is scheduled for Monday, December 6, 2021 from 7:00-8:00 pm at the Glenview Public Library. Teams compete in one meet each. Meet dates run from January 18 – March 10, 2022. Here is this year’s book list. Paper copies are available at the Glenview Public library. Glen Grove School has a collection on Destiny Discover for students.

Overdue Books

Overdue notices are sent weekly to students' email accounts. Students can check their Destiny Discover accounts at any time to see what they currently have checked out or overdue. Parents receive overdue notices once a month and do not need to respond to notice unless they have a question about overdues. Books that are 60 days overdue will be considered lost. We are asking parents to pay for lost books with a check payable to Glen Grove School. If the book(s) is found within the current school year, we are happy to refund the money. The cost of the book(s) is included in the overdue notices. Any questions, please contact the LRC Associate, Mrs. Pam Duby. She is happy to assist you.

Students are invited to participate in Glenview's 2021 Character Counts Poster and Video Contest. This year's theme is "Who is your hero?" What qualities make this person a hero? How can you take those qualities and use them in your life?

3rd and 4th graders can draw, paint or color an original poster. 5th graders can create a video individually or in teams of up to 3. Gift card prizes will be presented to the winners at the January 18, 2022 Village of Glenview Board of Trustees meeting. Parts of one of our winning posters will also be featured on next year’s Hero Hustle Run shirt!

Submission deadline is December 1, 2021.

Missing Something???

Our Lost and Found is located in the lunchroom. If your child is missing a medium-to-large sized item - a jacket, a water bottle, a pink and green beach towel - please ask them to check there. If they are missing a smaller or valuable item - eyeglasses, jewelry, keys, phone - please have them check the Little Lost & Found in the office.

Please help us by writing your child's name on a tag on their jacket! Thank you.

Last Day of School is now Friday, May 27

At the October 18th Board of Education meeting, the Board approved the following change to the 2021-2022 calendar:

The last day of student attendance is Friday, May 27, the day before Memorial Day weekend (changed from Wednesday, June 1).

Due to construction projects which include renovations to half of our classrooms over the summer, the construction managers have told us that all classrooms and buildings must be vacated entirely on Friday June 3 to help ensure the on-time opening in the fall. The district has decided that May 31 - June 2 will be reserved for teachers and staff to clear out their work spaces and to identify items that need to be packed, labeled and stored. These days were chosen because the district does not want teachers to be without the materials they need for students while students are still in the classrooms.
