Monday, November 30: Distance Learning Resumes

Shift to Distance Learning

During Distance Learning, please contact the office at 651-621-6600 to set up an appointment if you need to come inside to the office area. Someone will be available to answer calls from 7:30am-2:30pm.


Below are five key pieces of new information pertaining to our shift to distance learning. If you would prefer to view this information in a 4-minute video presentation, click here.


Monday-Thursday at 7:45am students in all three groups (group 1, group 2, distance only) are to log into their Mounds View Gmail calendar. To begin these days, students will engage in a grade level specific “Morning High Five,” led by our Dean and Administrative team. The “Morning High Five” will include daily announcements, social-emotional learning, celebrations, reminders and connectedness activities. A link to the Morning High Five will can be found Mon-Thurs in student's gmail calendar.


Academic classes will follow the Morning High Five, beginning at 8:15am. Live instruction will then take place throughout each day. View our course schedule for each day here.


  • Increasing engagement and learning on Friday

The biggest change with our shift to distance learning is that Fridays will now be a modified 7-period day, meaning students will have either a live meet or on-demand learning for each of their seven classes.


On Fridays, students will begin their day at 8:15am. All core classes (math, science, English Language Arts and Social Studies) will be taught live for 40-minutes. Students may also have music, Art, Spanish, Integrated Science or Phy-Ed classes live as well. To know if one or more of these classes is live on Fridays, students simply need to look for a Zoom link in their calendar. If there isn’t a zoom link, students are to find their on-demand learning in Google Classroom.


  • Continuing to Contact the school in regard to student illness

As is the case with in-person learning, please make us aware each day if your child is unable to participate in their classes or complete their assignments. Accurate attendance records are critical for a variety of reasons, and we want to make sure that students are marked properly. Please call and leave a message on our 24/7 attendance line directly at 651-621-6601.


Please also continue to notify us when your family and/or child(ren) may or have be exposed to the Covid-19 virus as we need to continue to provide documentation to the Minnesota Department of Health. If your student or family member may have been exposed, please contact Mr. Tweh, our Covid Coordinator, at 651-621-6630 or richmond.tweh@moundsviewschools.org .


  • Plan to increase student attendance

Previous and current experience has shown that student attendance from home is inconsistent. Often, parents tells us they did not know their student wasn’t logging on. With live instruction now taking place each day, our teachers will take and submit attendance within the first five minutes of each class. The families of any student marked as absent without prior notice will automatically receive a call from the school within the first ten minutes of the start of each class. This phone call is to notify parents real-time that their student has not logged into their teacher’s live Zoom. Our obvious hope is that parents can assist us with getting their student to attend required classes. Students will be marked present if/when they jump on to Zoom late.


  • Contacting students directly via phone or text

To increase the efficiency and timeliness of communication, Edgewood would like to be able to directly contact students that have their own phone. Please consider providing or updating us with your child’s cell phone number by clicking here.

Student Password Expiration - Technology

Your student may receive an e-mail stating their password is about to expire. See example of e-mail below.


When using the password portal, their username will be their student ID. Instructions can be found here to change their password. Other information during distance learning can be found on the Technology support site.

Attention All Edgewood 6th Graders!

Beginning this year, all incoming 6th graders will receive a brand new chromebook that will be checked out to them and be their responsibility for the three years they are a student here at Edgewood.


We will be swapping out 6th grade chromebooks starting Monday, December 7, from 3:00-7:00 p.m. to accommodate working families as well as Tuesday, December 8, during normal office hours from 8:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.


Please come to Edgewood with your current chromebook and charging cord during the specified times - Swaps will not be done if the charger cord is missing.


We will provide curbside service, please stay in your vehicle. During normal office hours from 8-3, if a staff member is not visible when you show, please call 651-621-6600 and let us know you are here to make a chromebook exchange.

Chromebook Expectations for All Students

Parents, please remind your students that school-owned devices, just like textbooks and other school-owned items, should be cared for and used properly. When transporting the device to/from school it should be secured in a backpack or other carrying case.


Chromebooks should hold a battery charge enough for a full day at school so the charging cables can stay at home.


While students are distance learning at home, they should take good care of and keep their Chromebook in a safe place when not in use.


Students are responsible for damage done to a Chromebook (just like they are for a textbook).


Replacement of a Chromebook is approximately $224

Repair/replacement of screen is approximately $37

Repair/replacement of keyboard is approximately $68

Replacement of a charging cable is approximately $25


Other repairs will be charged according to the time and materials required to make the repair.

Lifetouch Online Photo Order Update

We have received photo orders from Lifetouch and they are located out in the front entryway in alphabetical order. See the times below for when the entryway will be unlocked. Please sanitize your hands before touching the envelopes.

If students did not get their photo taken for the yearbook, you may take a picture at home and submit it to Ms. Penner (anna.penner@moundsviewschools.org) to be used in the yearbook. We ask that you follow the guidelines of a school picture as close as possible, using solid backgrounds and a head shot from the chest up.


Also, some teachers may have contacted families for material pick-ups this week. Extended hours for the rest of this week are:

Free Meal Pick-up: New Locations and Times

Please note that there is no meal pick-up next week (Nov. 23-27). Starting Wednesday, December 2, FREE meals will be available for all students for curbside pickup at the schools listed below. Meals will be available every Wednesday and Friday from 10:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.

Meals will be FREE to all those who are under age 18. Families and students will not need to provide a name or PIN number to pick up the meals. For more information, visit our website.

News from the Egewood Library

Hello from the Edgewood Library! Now that all students are learning from home for a while, how students get books has changed.


Distance learners will continue to put books on hold using our online system, Destiny Discover, but curbside pick up will no longer be available. Instead, books will be put on a shelf or table in the front entryway at EW and students or families may walk in the front doors to find their books in a bag labeled with their name. Please do NOT come to Edgewood to pick up requested books until you've received the confirmation email that they are processed and ready for you. A book drop will be outside the front doors at EW for students to return books whenever they are done reading.


Blended Learners learning from home for a while will now be requesting books using THIS GOOGLE FORM. More information can be found by watching THIS VIDEO. Once we receive the request and have the books ready to go, we will send the student and their grown-up an email that they can come and pick up their books in the front entryway at Edgewood. A book drop will be outside the front doors at EW for students to return books whenever they are done reading.

EPAT Information


Edgewood Parents & Teachers (EPAT) is an organization in which parents and Edgewood (EW) teachers and administration work together to help meet the needs of the EW students and staff. Please join EPAT for our next meeting on Monday, November 30.

OUR EYES ARE ON IRONDALE

Irondale Boys Swim & Dive Team

Attention Edgewood 7th and 8th grade boys - The Irondale boys swimming and diving team is looking for new swimmers and divers interested in joining our team! Seventh and eighth graders are able to join the high school team and the new IHS home pool is located at Edgewood Middle School. Worried that you have never competitively swam or dove before - no problem! Our coaches and experienced team members will have you competing in no time!


Registration is open and the season officially starts on Monday, November 30. We will not be in the pool right away and plan to meet via Zoom on Monday, November 30, to talk a little bit about how the start of the season will go. We will be following all MSHSL COVID-19 protocols to make sure all athletes and coaches are safe throughout the season. This is a great way to be able to get out of the house and stay safe during this crazy time.

Middle School Consent Form for High School Activities

Seventh & eighth grade athletes that wish to participate on a high school team will also register online. Before you begin your online registration, approval must be obtained from the middle school principal or dean, the high school activities director and coach. In addition, signatures from both student & parent/guardian are also required. Please complete this Middle School consent form and deliver to the high school activities office before you begin the online registration.

COVID INFORMATION

Covid Testing

We are encouraging all staff to get tested for COVID-19 weekly before the Thanksgiving Break. Testing is one way to identify and isolate the virus to prevent the spread within the school community. Given the current surge in cases and availability of other testing options, we recommend that all school employees order their test via the unique URL that was sent in September. All District employees received an email with a unique URL to access a no-cost COVID-19 saliva test, courtesy of the Minnesota Department of Education. Refer to the email you received in September to order your test. The Department of Education suggests ordering and using your test before the program ends on December 30, 2020. If you have questions or can't find your email (try searching for “COVID-19 saliva test”), contact humanresources@moundsviewschools.org.


If you have already used the test referenced above, consider the options below to get tested.


At-home COVID-19 saliva testing

Minnesota offers free, at-home COVID-19 saliva testing for people who believe they need to be tested, with or without symptoms. Right now, families can order up to five test kits per household. Families will be asked if they have insurance, but the state will cover the costs for any uninsured or underinsured families. You should not receive a bill using this testing option. All COVID-19 testing is free at Minnesota Department of Health community testing events. We are always planning more community testing events across the state, working together with communities to make sure everyone can get tested. Tests are free for everyone, and no identification or insurance is required.

Home Screening

Answer these screening questions each time you are going to send your child to school, child care, or another youth program. If you answer “yes” to any question, your child should stay home.

Please follow the guidelines from the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH).

*Please note that if you have one student who needs to stay home with one or more common symptoms of COVID or two or more less common symptoms, their siblings also need to stay home until COVID has been ruled out as the cause of illness.


What is isolation?


Isolation means keeping someone who is sick away from others to help keep the illness from spreading.


What is quarantine?


Quarantine means keeping someone who is not sick yet, but was exposed to a sick person away from others. This is used to prevent the spread of COVID-19 because people can spread it before developing symptoms.


What to do if your student needs to stay home due to illness, quarantine or while awaiting COVID test results?


Call your school’s attendance line to report your student’s absence. School staff will contact you to help determine the length of recommended absence based on the MDH COVID-19 Decision Tree.


What if my child tests positive for COVID-19?


Please contact your school’s COVID Coordinator or Health Office to report the positive test result. We will work with you to ensure you have the information you need and begin identifying and notifying close contacts under the guidance of MDH.


Will this information be shared?


We will not share any identifying information about a lab-confirmed case that is reported to us except for the purpose of reporting to MDH.


Will we be informed if a positive case is reported in school?


There are two levels of notification that would be shared as appropriate when a lab-confirmed case is reported to school.

Close contact notification - close contacts will be notified when a lab-confirmed case is reported and receive direct information regarding quarantine and next steps. This contact tracing will be conducted in partnership with MDH.


General notifications - when a lab-confirmed case is reported in a classroom or school setting, families of students who share a classroom, learning space, bus route, small group, etc. will be notified after close contacts have been identified.
