No More Reading for Junk: Best Practices for Motivating Readers (K-5)
Educators have long known that motivation matters in the classroom, but transferring that knowledge to classroom practices may not be so clear. The Michigan Essential Instructional Practices for Literacy, K-3, support the need for increased focus on engaging students in meaningful text and motivating all learners to see themselves as successful readers and writers (MAISA GELN Early Literacy Task Force, 2016).
"No More Reading for Junk," co-authored by the presenter, Dr. Barbara Marinak and colleague, Linda Gambrell, focuses on motivating students to succeed through intrinsic means without the use of food, points, toys, or other fleeting rewards. Research suggests that reading for these kinds of incentives not only doesn’t encourage reading in the long term, it actually depresses motivation to read (Gambrell, Marinak 2008).
Dr. Barbara Marinak will expose what doesn't work for students, but more importantly, her vast experience as an educator and researcher proving what DOES WORK! Attendees will explore their own classroom practices and learn strategies to engage readers AND writers, including updated motivation surveys, forming and sustaining book clubs, and cultivating a classroom culture of growth!
