Transcendentalism

"Milk and Honey" by Rupi kaur

"you tell me to quiet down cause

my opinions make me less beautiful

but i was not made with a fire in my belly

so i could be put out

i was not made with a lightness on my tongue

so i could be easy to swallow

i was made heavy

half blade and half silk

difficult to forget and not easy

for the mind to follow"

Nonconformity

This poem from the book "Milk and Honey" is related to Nonconformity in Thoreau's transcendentalist principles. The poem talks about how you should not follow other people, and choose your own path in life. When it says "i was not made with a lightness on my tongue so i could be easy to swallow' relates to how Thoreau says that true nonconformist are often misunderstood. You can listen to what they say, but that doesn't mean that you can understand what it means.

I believe that nonconformity is very important in society today, because if everyone acted the same way, and did the same things then no one would ever be happy with who they are, because they would be like everyone else.

Bob Marley

Get up Stand up lyrics, and a quote

"Get up, stand up: Stand up for your rights!"

And

"Don't give up the fight"

Also, a quote from Bob Marley

“I believe in freedom for everyone, not just the black man.”

Bob Marley strongly believed in "Least Government Best" in Thoreau's Transcendentalist principles. He very much believed that if you wanted to be free, and didn't agree with something, you had to "stand up for your rights!". Marley Started political problems in Jamaica because of his choice of religion, and music, but he kept standing up for those beliefs, even after an assassination attempt. While Marley believed in standing up for what you believe in, he also believed in doing every thing peacefully, he even performed in a "One Love Peace" concert after the assassination attempt, which also relates back to Thoreau when it says "practice some sort of non-violent law-breaking if you believe the law to be in violation of your principles."

I believe that if you do not believe in something that the government does you shouldn't just leave it and not do anything about it. You should do what you feel in your heart is right, but it doesn't need to be done violently, because violence never solves anything, but makes it worse.
