Last Day of School - June 8 - 11:45 Dismissal
Looking Ahead ~ Thank You!
THANK YOU! We had a great 2022-23 school year. We had 731 Golden Lions, we met 6 of our 8 academic goals for literacy and math (and were incredibly close on the other 2 goals), which means that our students closed all sorts of learning gaps. We had a great concert and art show, we went to camp, the Zoo, Madison, and the Admiral's game. We welcomed so many new students to South Milwaukee this year, we are sending 48 great kids off to middle school, our PTO hosted so many events, and much more! Lakeview is a great place because of the people - the students, staff, and families that work together to make learning impactful and meaningful. Have a great summer!
Last Week of School Activities
Field Day is on Tuesday afternoon, June 6th. Mr. Walters and his volunteers have organized several Olympic events to celebrate the end of the 2022-23 school year. Be sure your student(s) wear running shoes that day. Depending on the weather, you will want to send sunscreen and a hat for your child(ren). However, please note that students must be able to put on their own sunscreen.
Last Day of School is 11:45 Dismissal - Students will be dismissed at 11:45 on Thursday, June 8. Report cards will be available on Infinite Campus that day as well (no paper copies). There is no lunch or bag lunch provided on June 8.
Chromebooks will be collected from all students in K-4 the last week of school. 5th grade will keep their Chromebooks over the summer (unless you are going to a different middle school next year).
Library Books were due May 31. If you still have book(s) at home that belong to school, please send them back right away.
School Supply List for 2023-24
Calendar for 2023-24 School Year
Open House for all SM elementary schools is Wednesday, August 30th from 5-7 p.m.
The first day of school for 5K-12th grade is Tuesday, September 5th.
Incoming 4K families will receive more info about the start of the school year.
The school hours remain the same next year:
5K through 5th grade is 8:30-3:35
All-day 4K is also 8:30-3:35. Please note the 4K calendar will be different than in previous years. There will be more Friday classes, so pay special attention once that calendar is available.
Need to get in touch with us this summer?
What happens when you stop exercising? Not only do we get out of shape, but then it gets harder to restart our exercise routines. The same thing happens to our learners. They lose some of the learning they have built up this year and teachers need to spend more time building up positive reading habits in September.
The good news is that it doesn't take much to maintain those reading skills in June, July, and August! 30 minutes a day for young students (4K-1st) and 45 minutes a day for older students (2nd-5th) would allow your child to start the next school year well and learn even more next year! Here is a link to the South Milwaukee Public Library summer reading program if you need some incentives. Don't forget that reading aloud to your child counts as well!
Do you have a preschool age child at home? The four best things you can do for them every day are:
1. Read to your child
2. Talk to your child
3. Sing to your child
4. Give your child social experiences
The more you can do each of these, the better. If you do those four things very well from birth to age 4, your child will be on the right track for grade school, college, and beyond!
Goodbye & Hello
As 2022-23 comes to a close, we bid a fond farewell to Mrs. Nicholson (24 years), Mrs. Carrier (32 years) and Mrs. Busalacchi (33 years). Many of you have been touched by these three amazing educators. Mrs. Carrier and Mrs. Busalacchi have only been at Lakeview while in South Milwaukee, and Mrs. Nicholson was at Rawson for a long time before joining us this year. This would be a great week to send them a quick note congratulating them on their well-deserved retirement!
Mrs. Hartung is not really saying goodbye, but she is moving from her current special education role at Lakeview to a special education role at Rawson. Mrs. Drake-Hames, our art teacher, is moving to SM High School to be an art teacher. Mrs. Sterbin, one of our instructional coaches, will be mostly at Blakewood, but still returning to work with 4th and 5th grades at Lakeview. Mrs. Edge has been a fantastic member of our special education team this year and she is going to be teaching in another suburb next year. We'd also like to thank Mrs. O'Neill for serving as Mrs. Paul's long term sub at the end of this year.
Coming to Lakeview next year:
Kheira Almanza will be our new 2nd grade teacher.
Julia Fischer will be our new 4th grade teacher.
Abby Baumann will be our new 4th/5th grade special education teacher.
We are still finalizing the hires of our new art teacher, 1st grade teacher, and ID-focused special education teacher.

Class Lists
• We will follow the same procedure as recent school years. If you have registered in Infinite Campus online by August 17, you will receive a postcard in the mail with your classroom teacher's name before Open House. If you do not complete online registration, you will not receive a postcard. This means that the only way you will find out your child's teacher is by completing online registration. Online registration opens in mid-June (watch your email). We will not post class lists on the front doors to ensure student privacy & security.
• Please note that we do not take family requests for particular teachers. All of our teachers are excellent at Lakeview!
• Families should not assume that because they had a particular teacher in the past that their next child will have the same teacher. With only two sections per grade level (except 3rd grade, which has 3 sections), this may have happened by chance over the years, but it is not something we take into account.
• If you are not returning to Lakeview, please let us know and register with your new school as soon as possible so the new school can request your child(ren)'s records.
5th Grade Recognition
Summer School
Summer School schedules were mailed to all families this week. Please check your mail, open it, and carefully read the information for summer school. This letter provides information about summer school. This year, elementary summer school will be at South Milwaukee MIDDLE SCHOOL (not at the high school as it was in the past due to construction at the high school).
• The first day of Summer School is on Tuesday, June 20.• No summer school on July 3 or 4.
• The last day of Summer School is on Thursday, July 27.
Summer School is Monday through Thursday at the middle school. All student drop off and pickup will be at the main, front doors of the middle school with parking across 15th Avenue in the neighborhood. Arrive early, and we definitely all need patience with this new location. This page on our website explains the parking and dropoff/pickup procedures. We will have crossing guards on 15th Avenue. Doors open at 7:55 a.m. and the first class starts at 8:00 a.m. If your child has signed up for four hours of classes, they are done at noon and must be picked up promptly. If students start later than 8:00 or are done before noon, they may not wait at the middle school - students may only be in the building for the times when they are enrolled in a class. Lunch will be served starting at noon each day in the high school commons (cafeteria). Summer school students going to lunch will need to be picked up by families at the middle school and walk outside to the high school entrance for lunch.
Please note: There are absolutely no registrations being accepted for Summer School at this time and there will not be any registrations taken in-person at Summer School in June. Registration needed to be returned by April 21.
