A Note From Physical Education: Kids Heart Challenge 2021
Greetings Klem South Families,
We are thrilled to be participating in our 24th annual Kids Heart Challenge Program (formerly Jump Rope for Heart) in physical education classes. The curriculum around this program focuses not only on what our students can do in their own lives to live healthy and active lifestyles, but also dives into the anatomy and physiology of the heart itself; pretty neat!
This year our goal is for our students to sign up and take the challenge by going to heart.org/hhc. Once there, make sure to search, "Klem Road South Elementary" to find our school. After signing up to be a heart hero, students will have access to valuable materials including educational games, recipes, fitness challenges as well as an optional opportunity to fundraise. As of March 3rd, our school has a total of 141 students registered and over $8,656 raised for the American Heart Association! These funds go directly to the greater Rochester area to help those experiencing heart disease.
Lastly, we will conclude this program on Friday, March 12th. Students who sign up will automatically earn a free wristband and sign our poster in the hallway. If a family chooses to raise money thank you gifts will be distributed in physical education classes.
Thank you so much for your support thus far,
Mr. Ciaburri and Miss Forsey
What's Happening Around the Building?
Grade 1 - It's the Marvelous Month of March! First grade students have been writing their opinion and supporting their thinking with good, strong reasons. They have been enjoying listening to the books in this year's March Book Madness and then voting for their favorite. It is so exciting to hear the winners of each round! In math, first grade students are solving word problems with missing partners, adding three numbers together, and working with numbers up to 120. They are getting so good at showing their work and explaining their thinking. In Fundations, students are learning about blends and applying their learning to their reading and writing. We are so pleased with the progress that the students are making! Keep up the great work First Graders!
Grade 2 - This month we are participating in Klem South’s March Book Madness. Look for more information from Mrs. Benz on how you can listen to some of our favorite read alouds from this year’s selected books from home too. March is also Women’s History Month. Your child can go to their Seesaw account to find a calendar with daily read alouds about women who have made a difference. In math, students have been learning how to do double digit subtraction this month. Getting stronger with basic facts with totals up to 20 is still a great way to support your child’s learning. We will be subtracting two digit numbers from three digit numbers by the end of this month! Second graders are focusing on nonfiction reading and writing. They are busy reading, researching and writing about famous Americans and other topics. Using texts and online resources, students are reading about and recording facts on a graphic organizer. They are learning about the parts of a paragraph (topic sentence, details and closing sentence) and how to turn a list of facts into a paragraph for others to read. The students are selecting topic sentences they feel would hook the reader and make them want to read their paragraph. One way to hook a reader would be to ask a question. Another way would be to give an interesting fact about their topic. After the topic sentences, they are adding at least three details and ending their paragraph with a closing sentence. We look forward to sharing your child’s progress with you this month during our parent/teacher conferences.
Grade 3 - Our third graders are so excited to be exploring fractions! We will be learning about fractions of wholes and sets, on number lines, and even using them to solve word problems! Because fractions occur in our everyday lives, this is a concept you can support at home. By using tools such as measuring cups and rulers to measure length and volume, you can provide a practical application of these concepts that your child will enjoy. ST Math is another helpful resource for students to see fractions in a different way. Thank you for your support. We are more than “half”- way to success when we work as a “whole” team!
Grade 4 - In 4th grade, students have been working to answer the guiding questions “How do animals’ bodies and behaviors help them survive?” and “How do writers use their knowledge from research to inform and entertain?”. These questions have taken us on a journey through many skills that we will continue to build throughout 4th grade including researching and notetaking skills within expert animal groups, locating and using supporting evidence/details in a variety of reliable sources, collaboration, perseverance and more! The final results were impressive animal research essays to inform and animal narratives which incorporated our research into realistic fiction to entertain.
Grade 5 - This month in fifth grade we are focusing on the study of space. All fifth grade classes have a remote field trip scheduled to the Challenger Center at the planetarium. We will be discussing planets and especially focusing on Mars as we have just landed a rover there! Aside from the field trip, we will be reading both fiction and non-fiction pieces about space in our ELA blocks. In math we are finishing up our division of whole numbers and decimals unit. We will then be working with measurement using metrics and customary measurement. So feel free to pull out the measuring cups or ruler and talk about measurement at home!

March Book Madness!
Our amazing Librarian, Mrs. Benz, has created March Book Madness at Klem South!
This week and next, all classrooms will be reading the "elite eight" to start us off. Classrooms will vote on their favorites and we will get down to the "final four" by March 12. On March 26, we will announce the winner for Klem South!
Half Day Conference Schedule
Parent Teacher Conferences for Webster CSD students grades UPK-5 will take place over four days, March 11-12 and 18-19, for all remote and hybrid students.
On Thursdays, March 11 and 18, AM students will attend school during their regularly scheduled class time, while PM students will not meet for class and that time will be set aside for conferences. And on Fridays, March 12 and 19, the PM students will have class while the AM time will be set aside for conferences. This schedule also applies to remote learners.
This is a change to the original school calendar. One of Webster CSD’s Essential Skills is communication. We believe making time for parents and teachers to meet together is important. Information on how to have a conference with your child’s teacher (including your conference time) will come directly from the teacher and school. All conferences will be done remotely this year.
Transportation will run as usual when class is in session.
March is Music in Our Schools Month!
While the experiences may look a little different this year, there will still be plenty to celebrate during Music in Our Schools Month. Our student musicians will have the opportunity to perform in ensembles throughout the month and parents are asked to check students’ Google Classroom accounts to view those performances. Be sure to check in with the district’s website, websterschools.org or social media platforms Facebook (@WebsterCentralSchools) and Twitter (@WCSDProud/@superwebstercsd) for any of the performances that can be shared there. We continue to be proud of the district’s music and fine arts program that is life-changing for so many of our talented students!
District Launches Podcast Series to Share Budget Development Information
The 2021-22 budget season is upon us and Webster CSD is trying something new this year to inform and educate everyone about the district's budget process. Webster CSD's new video podcast Let's Talk, One Webster is now available for viewing by visiting our district budget web page. While there, be sure to explore other important information regarding the district budget planning process.
If you would like to submit a video question for future podcast episodes, please send a video recording (mp4 format) asking a question to Krista_Grose@webstercsd.org. We look forward to your participation!
* Lastly, don’t forget to visit the board of education’s redesigned web page at www.websterschools.org/board. You’ll find information about our work, strategic planning for WCSD, and some FAQs. We hope you’ll take a few minutes to visit!
