"If it's to be...It's up to me!"
Fall is in the air!
Fall is in the air here on the central coast, and we are all enjoying the cool weather here at SBE. Crossing our fingers that the weather remains the same for awhile!
Here at SBE October brings a whole lot to look forward to, including:
- Walk to School (October 2nd)
- Picture Day (October 4th)
- Campus Beautification Day (October 5th)
- School Site Council Meeting (October 8th)
- PTO Meeting--6pm (October 9th)
- Digital Citizenship Week (Week of of October 14th)
- Give Back Night at Pismo Fish and Chips (October 15th)
- Great California Shakeout Day (October 17th)
- Hearing Screening--1st/2nd/5th (October 16th)
- Red Ribbon Week (Week of October 21st)
- Screenagers II @ Clark Center (October 23rd)
- Jamba Juice @SBE (October 25th)
- Minimum Day (October 31st)
On the socio-emotional front, please note that October is "National Bullying Prevention Month". Here at SBE we will be continuing to work with all students on our PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports) system as well as our anti-bullying approach: Stop, Walk and Talk. In addition to this, our 6th grade will get lessons from Pismo PD on "Cyber Bullying" and communication will be sent home to parents as well. On the cyber front, please also note that the district will be showing "Screenagers II" October 23rd at 7pm at the Clark Center. This is a free screening for all LMUSD parents. I encourage all parents to go to see the movie, but particularly our upper grade students. It is an incredible resource to understand the impact of social media and ways to manage the use of social media for our pre-teen and teenage students.
Many of you have been hearing more and more about Vaping in the news. It saddens me that we have seen an increase in Vaping across our country and that the health concerns are just being understood. Please take a moment to review this handout about the dangers of Vaping.
On the curriculum and instruction front I am happy to share that our classes are truly in "full swing" by this time of year. As I observe in classrooms I see students engaged in learning and working positively with their peers. I also observe some INCREDIBLE teaching going on by the fantastic teaching staff here at SBE. I also want to note that for our GATE students, there will be some communication coming out from Amber Weber our GATE Coordinator this year about the incredible GATE offerings that we have on tap for the 2019-2020 school year.
Please be advised that we will have our Parent/Teacher Conference during the week of November 18th. We realize these conferences are later in the year than in years past, but please note that Report Cards will be handed out at conferences this year and there will be ample time for teachers to explain the contents of the report cards during the conference itself.
I would also like to note that any parents that would like a conference before the week of November 18th can feel free to reach out to their teacher and schedule one. For the the week of November 18th, please be on the lookout for a scheduling tool for parents to sign up for conferences remotely. This process will look similar to what it looked like last year. We know how busy your lives are, and look forward to providing this tool for you to schedule the times that work best for you!
We also wanted to take a moment to recognize all students who received a "Student Shark Shout Out" during the beginning of the school year. These students were recognized by their teacher or another educator on campus for being particularly Kind, Respectful or Responsible. Each of these students received a Certificate, had another Certificate posted outside the office and also got a positive phone call home from Mr. Snyder! I cannot tell you how fun it is to call home and relay to parents the incredible choices their students are making. It is a highlight of the week for me, and can certainly say that parents LOVE getting a phone call like that from the school!
Students recognized with a "Shark Shout Out": Audrey Heisdorf (6th Grade), Kate Harvey (6th Grade), Amelia Pfost (6th Grade), Coco Olmsted (4th Grade), Colin Mayes (4th Grade), Kya Bulgin (2nd Grade), Tane Kurth (6th Grade), Austin Appiano (1st Grade), Coral Smith (1st Grade), Zeb Johnson (2nd Grade), Cate Kaplan (6th Grade), Jaedyn Poelking (K), Beau Quaresma (K), Bixby Hardy (6th), Kyla Brandenberg (1st), Maddox Smith (1st), Mckenzie Byars (4th). Great job to all!
Thanks to a wonderful start to the year, and please call the office if you have ANY questions, comments or concerns.
Best,
James

Updates from the Office
- Please clear your students absences within 24 hours. Remember to get a doctor's note for appointments that take place during school hours. Once the note is submitted to the office it will clear the absence. Doctors notes must be submitted within 24 hours of a student returning to school. Attendance letters start going home after 3 unexcused absences. After 7 unexcused absences your student may receive a referral to the School Attendance Review Board. If you are unsure if an absence is excused or not feel free to ask the office.
- If your child will be away from school for 5 or more days consider initiating a Short Term Independent Study Contract. This is a great way to help your child stay on track with their class. You may pick up the contract application in the front office. Please give us a two weeks notice to enable the teacher time to prepare the work.
