WEEK ENDING IN 04/15/2022
Dear OSES Families,
Great work 3rd-6th grade families wrapping up the first round of Florida Standards Assessments (FSA). Please see the testing calendar below for specific dates that we will be testing in May. Thank you again to PVO and all the families who were able to help make our FSA Pep Rally so successful.
Congratulations to all the students who participated in the Girls Adventures in Mathematics competition and the Noetic Math Competition this week. At OSS we value students opportunities to demonstrate their enthusiasm and skills through various competitions all year long.
Today, we had 55 Student National Medical Association (SNMA) from all other the U.S. speak to our students about going to school in the medical profession. They were able to visit all 4th and 5th grade classrooms this morning and then hosted a virtual Q & A sessions for all classes in the afternoon. The Student National Medical Association is committed to supporting current and future underrepresented minority medical students, addressing the needs of underserved communities, and increasing the number of clinically excellent, culturally competent, and socially conscious physicians. For more information please visit snma.org and feel free to ask your scholars what they were able to learn today.
Respectfully,
Mr. Singleton

THIS WEEK IN GRADES K-6
KINDERGARTEN
This week in Science we began exploring living vs. non-living as well as plant needs and characteristics. Next we will move on to animal needs and characteristics. After that we will compare plants and animals to see how they are alike and different as well as observe how books and other media often portray plants and animals with characteristics that they do not have in real life. In Social Studies we are still focusing on wants and needs and being able to differentiate between a basic want and a basic need, as well as understanding US currency comes in different forms.
Our students took their reading i-ready diagnostic tests this week and will be completing their math diagnostics next week. I-ready scores will be shared with families after testing is complete.
On May 17th the Kindergarten classes will be going bowling. Permission forms were sent home earlier this week.
Below you will also find the direct school pay link for payment and a google form. Please fill out the google form whether your child will be attending or not (VERY IMPORTANT).

FIRST
This week in 1st grade we learned about Needs & Wants for Social Studies, with the idea that you may have to give something up in order to get something that is necessary. We read some fun books for Reading, and our students took their iReady Reading Diagnostic #3. We know that they did their very best! For Math we delved into 3D shapes, as well as starting our unit of Data. The students created different graphs with information given, and learned what it means to create a survey.
Ms. Keene’s class created their own donut shop and had students buying and selling the donuts that they made. They loved this project! We were also invited by Ms. Lizarazo to join her high school Spanish class students to have a read aloud outside on the pavilion. The high schoolers created their own Spanish books and incorporated fun props to have the students engaged. They had an awesome time!
SECOND

FOURTH
Ms. Michetti's class created model flowers to help identify parts of a flower. Students used play-doh, marshmallows, straws, and wooden rods to demonstrate their understanding.
FIFTH
This week in 5th grade, students have taken the iReady Reading Diagnostic in the morning. In Ms. Brown's class, students have been learning about causes of the American Revolution. In her afternoon class, students tried to recreate events leading to the American Revolution using CoSpaces for the first time, a website that allows students to experiment with 3D modeling, interactive storytelling, block-based coding, and VR content creation.
