What Do You Need to Know about the World Cup 2022?
I know that we are in the middle of the college and professional football season and basketball season just started. There is an event, though, that will soon start that is truly bigger and louder and more fanatical than either of those sports. It is the World Cup of Soccer 2022. (I spent a summer in Rio de Janiero, Brazil, in 1990 when the World Cup occurred. Every time Brazil scored a goal, you could feel the apartment building literally shake with excitement. Everything in the city shut down when Brazil played.) Here are a few things to know about this major international event. 1. It will be held in Doha, Qatar. This is the first time a middle eastern country will host a World Cup. Usually, games are played all over a country but Qatar built eight stadiums that are located within thirty minutes of each other in the suburbs of Doha. This will benefit players (and fans) who won't have to travel lots between games. All eight sites are linked by subway. 2. This is the first World Cup played in November and December. The first game between Qatar and Ecuador is November 20 and the final is December 18. Normally, the WC is held every four years in the summer when professional soccer leagues take a break. Given that summer temperatures can rise to 120-125 degrees in Doha, the governing board (FIFA) recommended the event be held in their winter months to keep fans and players safe and healthy. 3. 32 teams from all over the world have qualified to compete. These teams are placed in eight groups of four and all the teams in each group will play each other. The top two teams in each group will move on to a field of sixteen to compete in a single elimination format. At that point, the winners move through the brackets to the finals. Favorites to win include Brazil, Argentina, France and England. USA is in Group B with England, Iran and Wales for the first round games. 4. This is the 22nd World Cup. The World Cup started in 1930 and has been held every four years except during World War II. The US Men's Team has reached the semi-finals while the US Women's Team has won the World Cup four times. The Women's World Cup will be held next year in 2023. 5. Why should the World Cup matter to us? The WC is the most watched sporting event in the world. While it is probably not on the radar of most Americans, this international competition catalyzes whole countries. It is the epitome of "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat" for sports fans around the world. We have more of our children playing soccer in the US than we ever have and our kids dream of being in the World Cup. This is such a great opportunity to help our children see other cultures through the lens of sport. It is also a chance for us to connect with friends who are from other countries. Events like the World Cup can become common ground for conversation and friendship. If you've been looking for a way to model for your child how to become more internationally minded, World Cup 2022 is a great platform for expanding all our horizons. Let's join our teachers, staff and students who come from other countries in cheering for a favorite team in the WC. Yes, I'm rooting for Team USA (but my backup team is definitely Brazil.) I can already hear the announcers calling "GGGGOOOOAAAALLLL!!!!" starting November 20.
Strength and Blessings,
Mr. Maness, Principal

Information about the Flu
Parents and Guardians,
We currently have a large number of students absent with influenza, “the flu” and influenza-like illness at Cherry Park this past week. As you may know, the flu is spread easily from person to person and school-age children are among the groups most affected. Flu symptoms include fever (over 100 degrees F), body aches, headaches, sore throat, cough, and fatigue and typically lasts from 5-7 days.
If you suspect your child is getting sick, please do not send them to school. Students who are experiencing the symptoms listed above need complete the following steps:
- Stay home from school
- Call the COVID Call Center to report your child’s symptoms 803-980-2016
- The COVID Call Center staff will provide additional information about flu and COVID testing
- The COVID Call Center will also ensure absences are coded correctly
- The COVID Call Center will work with the Nursing Services department to determine classrooms that have an increase in student illness.
Our school staff are working closely with the RH Schools Nursing Services department and SC DHEC to monitor flu conditions in our school, make decisions about the best steps to take and ensure disinfecting practices are being followed. Custodial staff will continue to disinfect classrooms and common areas regularly. Classrooms with an increased number of sick students will be disinfected nightly.
Here are a few things parents can do to help our school reduce the spread of illness:
- Teach your children to wash their hands often with soap and water.
- Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue or upper sleeve when you cough or sneeze.
- Take time to get a flu vaccine. Flu vaccination is the best way to prevent the flu. DHEC strongly recommends all South Carolina residents older than 6 months old get the flu vaccine as soon as possible to prevent the flu, unless they have a medical reason not to be vaccinated.
- Teach your children not to share personal items like drinks, food or unwashed utensils.
- Know the signs and symptoms of the flu. Symptoms of the flu include fever (100 degrees Fahrenheit, 37.8 degrees Celsius or greater), cough, sore throat, a runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, and feeling very tired. Some people may also vomit or have diarrhea.
- Don’t send children to school if they are sick. Any children who are sick at school will be sent home. Staying home when sick will allow your children to rest and allows you to monitor their health closely.
