Notes from the Learning Lab
November/December Edition written by our kids
Hello, families!
My name is Mindy Kirschner and I will be student teaching in your child’s classroom this semester! I am in my last semester at Ball State University and I am so excited to spend it in this 4th grade class! I attended Saint Simon for grade school, and then went onto Bishop Chatard High school. In my last two years of high school and my first year of college I was an assistant teacher at Polly Panda Preschool and was also a lead teacher for a summer. Since I was about 16 I knew that I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up, so I am thrilled to begin this journey with this amazing class and to get to know your children! Please reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
E-Learning by Ella
We’re Snowed in!
Oh no! Snow and Ice have come to Noblesville and you are stuck at home! But not to worry E-learning has got you covered! At North Elementary we recently have had a practice E-Learning day in case of snow days so we don’t have make-up days when we don’t usually have to go to school. E-learning is a new way to make up for snow days but because we can’t go to school we do the work on canvas (a learning app.) When you go into Canvas Press on one of the courses (language arts, math, and learning lab home) there will be a button that shows a keyboard a picture of a book on it and says E-learning at the bottom.
When you press the button it will take you to the E-learning for that subject. Like if you pressed it in the math section it would take you to a section you would find p.d.f’s for math that you were supposed to do when you were going to go to school. P. D. f’s are links to worksheets that you download to Notability and work on. To get there you press a box with an arrow on it and a bunch of apps will appear. Press the one with a blue background with a pencil on it. Then you can work on it.
Music
The World of Christmas Music By Ali
Music class in the winter time is a great opportunity to learn, sing, and play Christmas activities. Remember the time you had to sing Christmas carols and do Christmas activities for a school play? We are doing the same thing in our music class.
In music we sing Christmas carols. Normally we sing in music class for two weeks, then the whole school gets together in the gym and we all sing together. Mrs. Krent has slides that we can read if we don’t know the words. I love singing Christmas carols.

The World of Christmas Music
Music class in the winter time is a great opportunity to learn Christmas carols and other Christmas activities. Remember the time you had to sing Christmas carols and do Christmas activities for a school play? We are doing the same thing in music class.
In music we sing Christmas carols. Normally we sing in music class for two weeks, then the whole school gets together in the gym and we all sing together. Mrs. Krent has slides that we can read if we don’t know the words. We sing songs like "Frosty the Snowman," rocking around the Christmas tree, and there are other ones too!
We do other things than just singing Christmas songs. This year Mrs. Krent let us play Dreidel. We also did a musical quote clapping game, when you see a music quote you clap. There’s the nutcracker, sugar plum fairy’s, there was a frosty the snowman one, there was also a sleigh ride one.
A Fun Fitness Activity
Pounding
Pounding is a activity with drum sticks that you pound on the floor. In our class we listen to music when we pound. Pounding releases our stress and it gives you exercise. We do this in Girls Group. Girls Group is a calming down group that makes us feel happy and feel our inside happiness. We pound during our Girl Group. We have a big group in our class. That is the first video you will see. At least 25 kids are in it. The second video you will see is us doing it.

Specials
In life skill P.E., a group of 7 kids from Kimmel/Jones class goes with them to be kinda like co teachers.. We only go when they have P.E. We are going to the life skill class because we think that the teachers might enjoy having a little more help with some of the harder to work with kids in the class because they might still be in lunch or in a calm down class. This is a reason that not all the kids come to P.E. sometimes. This is how we help out during P.E. for the life skill class.

Division
Division isn’t that hard you see that it is easy when you know the steps like 123 or 1+1. Some people think that division is hard but really they aren’t trying you see division can be pretty easy when you know the steps.
The steps are, first you divide the nine by the six, then you multiply around the outside, then you subtract the nine by the six and get three, then you bring down the three and you have thirty three witch you divide by six and multiply around the outside and subtract the thirty three by thirty and get three, then you bring down the eight and get thirty eight witch you divide by six and multiply around the outside and subtract thirty eight by thirty six and when there is nothing left to bring down your problem is done and you have one hundred fifty six remainder two. This is just an example but you can youse the steps dirty-divide, monkey-multiply, smells-subtract, badly-bring down with any division problem you come across.

I Need a Turtle, Mom
Millie is annoying. She bites your ankles. Stella is Dad’s guard. She is always by his side. Also Millie is a dog that cuddles up with you and she just goes to sleep. You would think that a lot of small dogs have a lot of energy, but not this one. She doesn’t play as much as she did before she wore the cone of shame. Stella is Dad’s guard. She is always by his side. She barks at Millie and other animals outside. I wish I could have my own pet. Did you know that 35 percent of millennials own their own a pet? Also did you know that 85 million families own a pet? Both of those are true. I think I should raise the percentage of people/families having pets. I think I should be able to get a pet turtle. I am trusted, I won’t put the wrong things in the cage, and the past and present of me doing good. I should have a turtle.
I should be able to get a pet turtle because I’m trusted to have one. I would feed it morning and night every day. Here’s a quick fact about what turtles can eat; they eat grated carrots, squash, cut apple, pear, corn, cooked kernels, peas, bananas, papayas, grapes, strawberries, raspberries, lettuce, and Kale. I would clean out the cage by myself and would clean it out once a week. Also, I will give it fresh water every day by myself. Back to the story about Stella and Millie, I fill the dogs water up whenever it’s getting low, and I would do the same for my Turtle. Here’s a quick fact; Young Turtles need to be fed three times a week at least.
I should be able to get a pet turtle because I won’t put the wrong things in the cage. I will have the right amount of water for him or her to swim in and have fun in the cage. I won’t put too much decor so I can see him or her and watch him incase he or her flips over and dies. One quick fact; in the cage I will need a tank, water, heat lamp, shelter, light, basking area, food, and cleaning supplies. I will buy that all. Back to the Millie and Stella story, I don’t give them food at dinner or a snack that I’m eating. I will make sure him or her will have room to lay down on flat land.
I should be able to get a pet turtle because of the past and the present. I have had a small pet in the past and it lived for a long time. I also cleaned my room once a week. I also think that I’ve earned a pet because of my grades in the past and the present. Back to the Millie and Stella story, I cleaned up their toys when they go do something else. I will buy everything that it will need to live and to have fun.
If I had a pet turtle I won’t be on my TV/IPhone as much as I do. My eyes won’t need glasses and you know I DON’T want glasses. Also here’s a story, on a Friday evening I’m sitting in my bed bored as a dog in a cage. Wishing I had a turtle. I should be able to get a pet Turtle because I’m trusted, I won’t put to much things in the cage, and of the past and present. Think about it, if you say no, all this work will be wasted. Please, mom.
Braces At 10?
I Should Get Braces When I’m Ten
Have you ever seen someone with robot teeth? You know, the metal squares connected by a wire? Well I wanna look like a robot MOM!! I think I should get braces when I’m 10.
One reason I should get braces is sometimes the teeth in my mouth that are out of place hurt. At school once I had a toothache and I couldn’t eat my lunch because my teeth hurt so much. It was mostly my crooked teeth that hurt. You wouldn’t want me to be in so much pain I couldn’t eat lunch, would you? And how would you feel if I told you that I only eat with my back teeth because it hurts to eat with the crooked ones in front. If you want me to stay hurt I would question your parenting skills.
I know braces are really expensive but I can help. I can pay for the first payment. I know people with braces and they all say that it doesn’t hurt. Even if it did hurt to get braces, I think I could handle it. Think about this… I’m currently losing my last baby tooth. I also wouldn’t be able to eat very many types of candy or sugary, salty, and fatty things. Also, I snore. Sometimes braces can prevent snoring.
Smiles change lives is a program that is for kids ages ten to eighteen. If you are in, your child ( I’m talking about me MOM) will receive braces for only $600.00!
I am double digits now right? Ten years old. In less than three years I will be a teenager. In less than two years I am going to be in middle school. You wouldn’t want me to be walking around middle school and high school with headgear on would you? ( I know people wear headgear mostly at night but don’t ruin my moment because I’m making an exaggeration MOM!) I did research and I saw that if people need braces, they should get them between ages 8 and 12. I’m right in the middle. I was also recommended to get an orthodontic scan at age 7 MOM! Did you know that about 5 kids in my class have braces. Some of them are 9!
I think I should get braces when I’m ten because I am old enough, I can help, and I don’t deserve to be hurting all the time. I think I should get braces when I’m ten.

Cats VS. Dogs
Imagine a cute, little, and fluffy cat huddled up in your arms. Her triangle ears, and soft purring calms you down after you had a stressful day at work. Then imagine a wild dog charging at you happy that you’re back from work. At first you are excited too! Until you look up, above your crazy little dog friend, there’s toilet paper rolling out of the bathroom. There’s broken dishes and plastic cups rolling on the kitchen floor. After you imagined both of these scenarios who do you like better, cats or dogs. I believe that cats are better than dogs because they are calmer, and safer.
The first reason I believe that cats are better than dogs is: cats are easier to take care of than dogs. The first example of this is that cats don’t need walked or leashed outside. A dog requires a leash when walked outside, or if there is not a fence surrounding the property. Cats can just roam freely. The second example is that cats can be left alone for longer periods of time. Dogs can’t be left alone for a long period of time because they will need attention, food, and walked. Cats don’t need constant attention. They also don’t need walked, cats can just can just use their litter boxes. You can also put out a larger amount of food, and water. The third example is that cats don’t require as many baths because they bathe themselves. Dogs require more baths because they usually don’t bathe themselves, and if they didn’t get cleaned they would probably stink a lot!
The second reason is that cats are quieter than dogs. Dogs bark loudly at passing cats and strangers. Cats stay silent and watch the passing cars and strangers, or they go on about their day. A dog tends to bark at night, and that could disturb your sleeping and your neighbors. A cat's meow is soft, and a dog's bark is loud.
The final reason is that cats are safer than dogs. The first example is that dog attacks can cause significant injuries while a cat’s bite cause a little scratch. The second example is that dogs are more protective for their owners. A dog might feel threatened from a single stranger. The final example is that cats can be declawed to help prevent people, furniture and other things of getting scratched up.
Once again who do you like better now? Cats or dogs? I believe that cats are better than dogs because they are calmer and safer. I hope you do too!
