Expanding CHISD High School Choice Options
Spring 2020 AP Exam Incentive
Cedar Hill ISD and Cedar Hill High School, encourages all scholars to take Advanced Placement (AP) exams for the AP classes they have taken. You are receiving this information because your scholar completed Advanced Placement exams in June of this year, and scored high enough to receive a monetary stipend.
The district is aware that your scholar has yet to receive their monetary stipend; we apologize for the delay. We want to celebrate your child’s accomplishment and distribute the stipends for your scholar’s performance on the AP exams. Cedar Hill HS is hosting a drive-through celebration and check pick up on December 3rd from 4:15 to 5:15 PM Scholars will need to provide their current student ID or driver's license to pick up their check.
If you are not available on the above date, you have until December 7th to pick up your check. You will need to schedule a pick-up time by contacting the campus secretary Shirly McShan at 469-272-2000 or shirley.mcshan@chisd.net Checks that are not picked by December 7, 2020, will be mailed to the scholar’s home address on file. Thank you for your patience and cooperation. If you have additional questions, please
feel free to email me at jason.miller@chisd.net
ALL ELIGIBLE SCHOLARS, WHO MET THE SCORING CRITERIA WILL RECEIVE AN EMAIL FROM ME.
Attendance Procedure Update
Starting November 16, scholars who have selected Traditional Learning will be counted present ONLY when they are physically in class unless they have been quarantined due to COVID-19.
- If a scholar is absent 3 consecutive days without an excused absence in the first week of the learning period, they will be switched to Flex Learning.
- This means that in-person scholars will no longer be able to turn in assignments by 11:59 p.m. of that day to be counted present.
- They must be physically present in class to avoid an absence. Quarantined scholars will be able to follow current practices to gain attendance for days they are quarantined.
- Scholars are required to turn in work for a grade but will not receive attendance credit if they are not physically in class.
- Parents must turn in excuses for absences.
Also, we offer an asynchronous online learning model that has been approved by the Texas Education Agency. This model allows scholars at home to take classes online, known as Flex Learning. Here are a few reminders for online learners:
- Attendance will be taken daily by 11:59 p.m.
- Lessons are available through Schoology.
- During the school day, teachers will provide opportunities for direct instruction.
- Scholars will also complete assignments and projects independently at the direction of their teacher. They will have access to recorded lessons, small group virtual tutoring and support, as well as online materials.
Attendance Office UPDATES
Parents - please make sure your student has Smart Pass installed on their phone and / or device. This is the only way dismissal passes are being sent this year.
Student absences can be reported with an email or phone call to the attendance office. Please include the student's name, grade and reason for absence.
We are checking students in & out using Smart Pass. Please make sure Smart Pass is installed on your student's phone and/or device. If your student needs to leave during the school day please send an email to the attendance office. You'll receive a reply that a Smart Pass has been created. Students cannot be released with a phone call.
VOE's can be requested via email.

SMARTPASS
Beginning November 2, Cedar Hill High School will begin using the digital hall pass system SmartPass. SmartPass does not have a GPS tracking system, it is just a digital version of the sign-out sheet and paper passes.
It provides administrators an accounting of which students are outside of the classroom during the school day. In case of emergencies such as fires, severe weather, or building intruders, administrators have real-time access to this critical information. Beyond the uses for emergency situations, the transition from the germ-carrying classroom woodblocks or paper passes used today to digital will also make it easier to identify excessive use of bathrooms or students who may be taking advantage of hallway privileges. This leads to more effective and informative parent-teacher conferences, as well as ensuring students are where they should be - in the classroom learning.
Students and staff can access SmartPass from a device or from their personal mobile device through the App Store or at www.smartpass.app/app. Once downloaded, students will use their CHISD email to log-in.
Please review the student overview below:
For more information, please visit the vendor’s website at https://www.smartpass.app/faq.

Synchronous Learning Plan
What is Synchronous Instruction?
Synchronous instructional time is essential for our Flex Learners to ensure they make personal connections with their teachers and classmates and to provide them live, intentional, and engaging instructional support. When planning synchronous time, teachers should consider what would be most beneficial to learners who are not enrolled in face-to-face instruction. Examples of appropriate synchronous activities include:
â—Ź Live direct instruction
â—Ź Guided practice
â—Ź Demonstrations
â—Ź Whole group and/or small group discussions
â—Ź Playing a video of pre-recorded direct instruction
â—Ź Reteach or addressing misconceptions
â—Ź Providing instructions for a learning activity
Beginning Monday, October 12, virtual scholars will have access to synchronous instruction in grades Pre-K - 12. All teachers will communicate daily schedules for synchronous learning times directly with parents through their Schoology courses. We understand that it may not be possible for some scholars to participate in synchronous instruction due to family circumstances. Teachers will continue to record lessons and post videos to Schoology.
Visitor Check-In
To assist CHISD with contact tracing protocols, we are asking visitors, families and staff
members to complete the short survey that is available at the main entrance of every campus.
An example of the signage you will see on the exterior main door is below.
If you are visiting a CHISD school campus or building where you do not office, you are asked to click the QR code with each visit and complete the short survey. This includes staff (custodians, central office staff, security officers etc.). Completing this check-in form will help Health Services facilitate contact tracing quicker.
Vendors, visitors and parents will also be required to complete the check-in form when arriving at a campus.
This signage is also available in Spanish for our families.
