Summary
The Shawl follows Rosa Lublin's life as she recalls her involvement in the Holocaust. The story begins with Rosa's recollection of the concentration camp where herself, her niece, and her young daughter were placed. The setting then changes to several years after the Holocaust. Rosa moves to Florida and befriends an elderly man named Simon Persky. It is during this time that she receives a letter from a sociologist in an attempt to interview her about her experience in the Holocaust. It is after receiving this letter that Rosa falls apart. It becomes apparent that Rosa has been hallucinating and is not in the right state of mind.
About the Author
Cynthia Ozick is an American-Jewish writer, novelist, essayist, and short-story writer. She was born on April 17th, 1928 in New York City. As of today, she is 87 years old. She attended Hunter College High School in Manhattan, NY, and moved on to earn her B.A. from New York University. She continued on to study at Ohio State University, earning her M.A. in English literature. So far, she has written 6 novels and earned 11 different awards for her writing.
