Roberts Middle School
GRIT: Volume 12
Dear Roberts,
As your principal, my ultimate goal is to help you unleash your full potential. I believe we have to deliberately practice leadership. This is why I want to share with you trap words in leadership. Language matters when describing the highest version of you or someone else. In the English language, using the words “only and “just” can be dangerous. If you take the word “only” and “just” out of a sentence, it changes the whole phrase.
A few examples to reflect on:
I am “just/only” a teacher. vs. I am a teacher.
I “just/only” called to brag on you. vs. I called to brag on you.
This is "just/only" a job. vs. This is Roberts.
As your principal, this is not “only" my job, but my calling to serve and support you. My hope is that this is a job that you love and cherish because your influence is beyond comprehension in the lives of many students.
Think about all the times you use “just” and “only” in sentences. Practice removing trap words and see how it changes the sentence.
INTERNAL ROUNDS
I looked at the data from the Internal Rounds that I missed last week. I am so proud of each and every one of you. Continue practicing using real-time data to personalize small group instruction daily. Planning small group instruction is not easy, but greatness has a price. Please continue to develop and sharpen your small group personalizing skills. This is a school of learning and development, so we should never be apologetic to enter the process of learning with a childlike mindset of curiosity.
I hope you had a great break. I am excited to see you this week. I hope you had plenty of rest and family time.
Jorly

Why Did I Have to Relearn How to Learn?
This is what I learned. The most essential prerequisite to understanding is to be able to admit when you don't understand something. I was ok with being the dumbest person in the room, because I was able to ask questions. Not just any questions, but questions of wonder and curiosity. Here are a few captions that summarize what I believe are my biggest take aways of learning. I am using you in the background because you are the very definition of learners!

ALL LEARNING IS STATE-DEPENDENT
NEVER LET OUR EGOS GET IN THE WAY OF LEARNING
BY GIVING YOURSELF PERMISSION NOT TO KNOW, YOU CAN OVERCOME THE FEAR THAT YOUR IGNORANCE WILL BE DISCOVERED
I THINK ULTIMATELY ONE OF OUR GREATEST SUPERPOWERS IS THE GIFT OF THE INCREDIBLE MIND AND THE INCREDIBLE BRAIN
BE CURIOUS AND BE FASCINATED LIKE CHILDREN
REMEMBER, YOUR MIND IS LIKE A SUPER COMPUTER AND YOUR SELF-TALK IS A PROGRAM THAT WILL RUN, SO IF YOU TELL YOURSELF YOU ARE NOT GOOD AT SOMETHING, THEN YOU WON'T BE GOOD AT IT
LEARN AS IF YOU ARE GOING TO TEACH IT TO SOMEONE
WE HELP OTHERS UNLEASH THEIR TRUE GENIUS AND BRAINPOWER TO LEARN
LOOK CLOSELY....
I MADE THE CUT!
I'M THANKFUL TO HAVE A FAMILY WHO TAKES EATING AS SERIOUSLY AS I DO!
YOU DON'T HAVE TO BE CRAZY TO WORK HERE.
WE'LL TRAIN YOU FOR FREE...
BRING THE JOY!
DON'T MAKE US USE OUR TEACHER VOICES! WE ARE ALL SMILES!
WE GO TO WORK FOR THE ENTERTAINMENT VALUE. YOU NEVER KNOW WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN NEXT.
