Happy Memorial Day Weekend Pirate Families!
Just 4 more days of virtual core instruction. On Wednesday, May 27th we will post our school wide supplemental instruction plan on our website for those who would like to continue learning activities through June 9th. This means that after this week, teachers will no longer be hosting live sessions (grades 3-5) or posting new video lessons (grades k-2). Teachers will not be checking for completion or providing feedback on student work after May 29th. We appreciate all the work that our students have put forth during our virtual learning experience. While virtual learning was not the same as face-to-face instruction, I am proud of everyone's (students, teachers and parents) effort to make the best of the situation. Our Pirate community really knows how to make lemonade when life gives us lemons. .
Everyone should have received a postcard from us by now. On the postcard you will see the plan for our Drop Off/Pick Up for laptops, chargers, library books and other school items. Students' personal belongings will be available for pick up as well. On June 2nd from 12-3:30 pm we will have families whose last name begins with the letter A-F. Later that afternoon from 4-7 pm we will have families G-L. On June 3rd from 12-3:30 pm, we will have families whose last name begins with the letters M-S and then families T-Z from 4-7 pm. We are hoping that by staggering the times we will be able to be more efficient and prevent a pile up on the highway. Please make sure that you follow the procedures in place and that all people stay in the car to ensure safety, compliance with the governor's orders and efficiency.
On June 5th we will be doing drive thru celebrations for our kindergarten and 5th grade students. The schedule will be as follows:
Dixon 9:00 am
Kollar 9:30
LaBelle 10:00
Lester 10:30
Matthews 11:00
Pope 11:30
Snyder 1:00 pm
Reibly 1:30
Durand 2:00
Lawrence 2:30
O'Brien 3:00
* Students will be able to drive through our parking lot during the designated time or order to take a photo, pick up a little gift and say goodbye to their teachers. We hope you all will be able to make it.
Covid-19 can't stop our Pirate tradition. On June 9th from 2-3 pm we will have a drive thru water party for those that would like to participate. During this time our staff will be outside with a water balloons and water guns to send the students off for summer soaking wet. Please make sure that everyone stays in the car, but fill free to bring your own water ammo to soak the staff too! If you don't want to get wet, this may not be the event for you or be sure to keep your windows up!
Last but certainly not least, we would like to say thank you those that gave their lives so that we can enjoy all the freedoms that we have today. I hope that you will take some time tomorrow to honor this great men and women. Have a safe Memorial Day!

Kindergarten Registration
Please remember that Kindergarten registration is continuing online. The registration site is housed on the OCS district website and any child domiciled in Onslow County who will reach age five on or before August 31, 2020 is eligible for kindergarten.
As part of the kindergarten registration process, parents will need to submit digital copies (scans or pictures) of the following with their registration:
- proof of birth date (birth certificate)
- proof of domicile such as a current (within 30 days) electric or water bill showing the parent/guardian name and address
- copy of the parent/guardian photo ID
Immunization records and the North Carolina Health Assessment will be required prior to the student’s first day but may also be uploaded with the enrollment packet.
Behavior Expectations for Virtual Learning
Now that students are becoming more comfortable with online learning, we are noticing some behavior concerns. Please take a few minutes to speak with your child regarding behavior expectations for virtual learning. Below are a few things that we have observed that are causing a disruption to learning.
* Please do not unmute your mic unless directed by the teacher.
*Please do not post emojis and comments unrelated to the lesson in the chat bar. This is for questions and responses to the lesson.
*Please do not email the entire class. Students may email teachers only regarding school work, but do not need to email their questions or work to the entire group. Email should only be used for educational purposes, not for personal use.
* Please make sure that your conversations and your submitted work and videos are school appropriate. If it is not appropriate for the classroom, then it is not appropriate to be posted online either.
*Please do not start sessions. The teacher will be the one to begin the session.
*Please do not record and share videos and images of teachers and other students. Doing so violates others' privacy.
* Please keep in mind that OCS 1:1 devices are to be used appropriately and only for educational purposes, failure to do so can result in loss of device.
* Parents please make sure that you are monitoring your child's technology. We have had several Tik Tok videos, SnapChats, posts, texts, etc. that have been shared with other students that are not appropriate. With so many people online, it is critical that you are monitoring your child's usage to ensure that they are representing themselves in a manner that you would approve and that they are being safe online.
Need tech support
Due to school closures because of COVID-19 and to maintain the continuity of digital instruction, the OCS Instructional Technology Department has implemented a plan to repair broken or malfunctioning district-issued student devices. Students will be able to drop off a broken or malfunctioning district-issued laptop, have an IT Technician repair the device, and have it ready to be picked up within 24 hours.
District-issued student laptops requiring repair during the disrupted school schedule because of COVID-19 can be dropped off between 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at the following locations:
- Dixon Elementary School
- Hunters Creek Elementary School
- Jacksonville High School
- Northside High School
- Richlands Elementary School
- Southwest High School
- Swansboro High School
There will be a Technician in the front office area during these times to receive laptops.
The student/parent should plan on the student being without a device for the following 24 hours.
Students may pick up their laptops at the same location on the following day between the hours of 1:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
THE STUDENT MUST BE PRESENT TO PICK UP THE DEVICE ONCE IT IS REPAIRED BECAUSE THE STUDENT WILL BE REQUIRED TO LOGIN TO THE DEVICE WHILE IT IS ON OUR NETWORK.
Technical support may be accessed via phone at 910-989-2101 from 8:00am to 4:00pm Monday through Friday.
