Making a difference today to create a better tomorrow.
April 9-13, 2018
I BELIEVE You Matter!!
I Believe in Being a Top 20
As a Top 20, we encourage those around us to be the best they can be, to see the best within themselves. Imagine, if you will, what a difference the use of mirrors and positive messages as noted in the report above can do to improve self-image and school culture. Would you like to give this a try? Let's talk... :)
To Dan, for all of your efforts to make our spring concert a success, thank you! What an amazing, energized, engaging performance! Thank you for making a difference today to create a better tomorrow!

Reading is Our Super Power!
We continue our efforts to meet our World's Best Workforce reading goal, reviewing a recent research-based article from the National Reading Panel linked here. Authors state "Effective reading instruction includes teaching children to break apart and manipulate the sounds in words (phonemic awareness), teaching them that these sounds are represented by letters of the alphabet which can then be blended together to form words (phonics), having them practice what they've learned by reading aloud with guidance and feedback (guided oral reading), and applying reading comprehension strategies to guide and improve reading comprehension." Note the video above, which clarifies the differences between phonemic awareness and phonics. In the article What is Guided Oral Reading, we learn that guided reading is "In general, a teacher, parent, or peer reads a passage aloud, modeling fluent reading. Then students reread the text quietly, on their own, sometimes several times. The text should be at the student's independent reading level. Next, the students read aloud and then reread the same passage. Usually, reading the same text four times is sufficient." The article offers details within the following guided oral reading techniques: reading with an adult partner, listening to a tape of a fluent reader, reading with a peer partner, and readers' theater.
