Reporting/Progress Reports
Clip:
Building Student Success with Standards-Based Grading and PowerTeacher Gradebook (which is a different version of a management system such as Web2School) Ken O'Connor presents his philosophy on how to fix broken grades while Chris Alldredge gives account on how PowerTeacher incorporates Ken's fixes. The Empower software is designed to monitor and harness student progress for each learning target and separate habits of work. Fix 1 - Don't include student behavior in grades.
Aviation Day Quickly Approaching!
From the students themselves!
"Dear parents of the freshman class: For those of you that haven't heard yet, on May 14th, some students in the freshman class are hosting a an "Aviation Discovery Day" at Laconia Airport. It would be much appreciated if some parents could donate hot dogs, buns, hamburgers and chips for food during the day. We would also appreciate if some parents could stay and do the grilling, as we will be busy leading the public around the expo! The parents that donate/grill will be able to eat for free!"
Educator's Corner
In the right hand tab, there is an Empower link that will get you to the site. Students can sign in using their google accounts. The last units include: Solving Systems of Equations & Inequalities, Polynomials, and Statistics, Data &Probability.
Next year, students will be entering either a Geometry course 1st semester, followed by Algebra 2 second semester. If they do not successfully complete the required Algebra 1 course requirements, they could be eligible for Algebra 1, Part 2 which will cover these last units mentioned above. If you have any questions about algebra 1, please don't hesitate to contact me, Ms. Linda Otten.
Algebra II: Mr. McDonald's Algebra 2 class just finished a section on basic logarithms. We learned how the Decibel scale works and how to compute sound intensity using base-ten logarithms. Did you know that doubling the sound intensity is an increase of only 3 db?
Global Citizenship: In Ms. Lynch's class, we are nearing the close of our "What Does it Mean to be an American?" unit- which has focused on government and citizenship in the United States. Students read Farewell to Manzanar, which is a personal depiction of the Japanese-American internment during World War II- and how it ties into American citizenship. We will conclude the school year with "Contemporary Global Issues".
Foundations of Literature: Foundations of Literature has begun shaking the dust off of our ideas about Shakespeare as we act out and watch different scenes from Romeo and Juliet! We started the unit off with a field trip to see the show live and then assigned ourselves to specific family-teams (either Capulets and Montagues). We then brandished foam swords, trying to win bragging rights for our own side. Simultaneously, we have done some deep study of poetry, and we're currently engaged in assembling our own poetry anthologies, which will include samplings of many poetic genres as well as poems we write, ourselves. Ask your scholars how the study of poetry and Romeo and Juliet connect! AND, while we are at it, bring them to see the drama department's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream on May 12-14th. Several freshmen are featured, including Ian Cluett, Margaret Witham, Kelly Hayes, Tehya Mooney, and Michael Marrone. For more information, check out our sway website: https://sway.com/eeBsZCHP1UXKV8II See you there!
Physical Science: With the start of the last quarter we push on to the physics portion of Physical Science. Gone are chemicals, mixtures, potions and explosions. Hello to sprinters speed and acceleration, free falling from space and force calculations. Students are measuring and calculating anything moving (and not), and writing incredible conclusions containing the why's and how's of what they are seeing.

Class of 2019 Update
"Cool Schools":
Steeplegate Mall offers points to compete for money through April. Opportunities include receipts, monthly double and triple points, email list, Facebook likes, newsletters, marquee or bulletin boards.
Only 2 more weeks for Steeplegate receipts. We are only .01/student behind for points. The new Hatbox Theater and the Bounce House/Laser Tag will be triple points during vacation week. Help us earn more money for BHS. Receipts may be turned in through the first week of May. -Sharon Hampton
Class of 2019 Fundraising:
The paperwork for summer fundraising has arrived. Opportunities exist for your child. We are looking for participation at the NHMS race track and Timberman Triathlon. Parents, students, other family members or friends may help the class raise money for future events and student participation. If you can work one Sunday in July, August and September contact Mrs. Hamilton or Mrs. Hampton.
We are requesting area business donations for an upcoming fundraising activity at school. If you want to get involved, contact the advisers for more information. You may also help bring letters, contribute time or money. Let them know how you would like to help.
