Thornhill Elementary PFC Newsletter
Volume 27, Issue 8, October 1, 2019
From the PFC President
As I write this, I have just exited the cockpit of the fastest ship in the galaxy, having made the Kessel Run in—believe it or not—11 parsecs as opposed to the 12 parsecs that Han Solo did back in...
Whoops. Sorry, but “flying” the Millennium Falcon here at Disneyland is so realistic that I thought for a moment I really was delivering supplies for the rebel resistance against the First Order.
Back here at Thornhill, and back to reality, I think we all owe a debt of gratitude to Rianna Stoll, Adrienne Selke, Erin Fredrick, and Christine Pereira for their tireless work in making the Back To School Donation Drive a success. It is this kind of dedication and involvement that shows how much we all care about Thornhill and making it a school we can be proud of.
If you are interested in being involved more at Thornhill, or just learning more about the PFC, the next PFC meeting will be held this coming Monday, Oct. 7, from 6-7 p.m. in the school library. After the meeting, we will retire to Taps and Takeout for a round of socializing.
Additionally, come chat with Mr. Daubenspeck this Friday, Oct. 4 starting at 8:30am on the back patio for our first “Coffee with the Principal.”
That's a wrap!
The Back to School Donation Drive has reached its goal!
Thank you to all the families who contributed and helped us raise $212,000 for our school! That is nearly 2/3 of the total budget of the PFC and ensures that we can continue to provide PE, library, art, computers, teachers' aides and so much more. We reached our goal in record time, exceeded our $200,000 goal and with 59% participation. Amazing!
Now, about the thank you gifts... We have been distributing Thornhill buttons as we go, so if you donated and didn't receive one, let us know. Also, for first time donors, we've have Thornhill car magnets, so if you didn't receive one, we can help. Finally, the insulated beverage tumblers were distributed to the early donors this week (sent home with kids). Questions? Email us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Also, if anyone missed out donating, you can donate any time of the year, and you can also show your support at the Walkathon on November 2 and the Auction in the Spring!

Coffee with the Principal - Friday, October 4 at 8:30am
With the Back to School Donation Drive wrapped up, we are so grateful to our community for all their support. But do you ever wonder HOW and WHO puts that money into action? Our school NEEDS parents to provide feedback and direction on what is working and not working in our community to make things happen. While we have many wonderful parents who donate their time on the PFC, we are in dire need of more participation so that more voices are heard!
This Friday morning, Principal Daubenspeck and several members of the PFC will host a meet and greet. This is your opportunity to provide us with your feedback, your ideas, your complaints and to get to know other parents and staff at Thornhill. We would love to see you for even a few minutes while you grab some free coffee and treat!

Let’s meet her!

I joined the Thornhill community in the Spring of 2018, and am thrilled to begin my second year as the librarian here at Thornhill! I have lived in Oakland for the last 15 years, and my husband and I have three daughters—all of whom are now Thunderbirds—Lucy (5th grade), Kaya (2nd grade), and Grace (TK). I have a BA in English Literature from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and I am currently studying to get my Masters in Library and Information Sciences at SJSU.

About the Thornhill Newsletter
The Thornhill Parent-Faculty Club (PFC) eNews team publishes this weekly newsletter each Tuesday in the school year to communicate school, PFC and OUSD news, events and information.
Email submissions to our Newsletter Chair, Evie Nagy, at firstname.lastname@example.org by 8 p.m. Thursday for approval—nothing sent after this will be included in the following week’s newsletter unless there are extremely compelling extenuating circumstances. It’s fine to include text in the body of the email with links and no formatting, and attach photos preferably as 150 x 150, 72 dpi JPG or GIFs only (not embedded in email or Word file). Submissions may be edited for spelling, grammar, brevity and clarity. Advertising and items not related to Thornhill are not accepted, as we need to keep the newsletter focused on need-to-know info for the community.
THANK YOU to everyone who submits articles and to PFC Board Members, Teachers, VP of Communications Erin Proudfoot, PFC President Rex Crum, and Principal Steve Daubenspeck. Member of Oakland Unified School District (OUSD).
