Library Instruction Highlights

Ms. Cerna's English & Reading Students

Thank you to Ms. Cerna for bringing her students to the library for book checkout! For most of her students, it was their first visit to the LEE Library this year. Students connected with a variety of interests such as wrestling, superheroes, and U.S. presidents. We are looking forward to the students returning to the library!

Reading Promotions & Resources for Students

Audiobook & eBook Changes

Changes are coming to the delivery system that offers students and staff ebooks and audiobooks. As of December 31, 2021 the OverDrive app will no longer be available. All ebook and audiobook checkouts will be facilitated through the Sora app. New to Sora? Familiarize yourself with the app by accessing it from Launchpad --> Library Resources folder.

Computer Science Education Week

Great reads to celebrate Computer Science Education Week (Dec. 6-12): The LEE Library has curated a selection of books about computer science. These books cover a range of topics from coding to cryptocurrency. Come by to see what we have available! We welcome suggestions and requests.

Winter Holiday Book Checkout

Include the LEE Library in your holiday plans: Stop by the library to checkout before the break begins! Electronic resources are also available 24/7 via Sora. If you have never checked out an ebook or an audiobook before please let us help you get started. Or, watch this short instructional video.

Hour of Code Kicks Off

Hour of Code

Hour of Code was held December 7: Ms. McDevitt, LEE Librarian, and Ms. Sampayo, STEM Computer Science teacher co-hosted this event in the LEE Library. Joined by STEM student volunteers, LEE and ISA students were encouraged to sample a variety of coding activities. STEM volunteers actively encouraged students to attempt coding. Another Hour of Code is planned for early 2022. Stay Tuned!

  • Nonfiction titles related to coding and computer science available in the eBook collection found on Sora ebooks (available to ALL students and staff via Launchpad --> Library Resources Folder).

Holocaust Remembrance Week

Holocaust Remembrance Week is January 24-28, 2022. Students curious to learn more about the Holocaust are always encouraged to visit the library to checkout books or utilize database resources to learn more about this topic. Educator resources are also available for teachers. Please visit the Texas Holocaust Genocide and Anti-Semitism Advisory Commission website for more information specifically about Holocaust Remembrance Week.

National News Literacy Week: Coming in January

National News Literacy Week is January 24-28:


About National News Literacy Week:

From News Literacy Project: "This annual event underscores the vital role of news literacy in a democracy and provides audiences with the knowledge, tools, and abilities to become more news literate. It also aims to inspire news consumers, educators, and students to practice news literacy and to strengthen trust in news media by reinforcing the role of credible journalism.

National News Literacy Week will take place January 24-28, 2022, and will offer a variety of ways for educators and students and the general public to get involved, virtually or in person.

Professional Development Opportunities in January

Shmoop

All teachers at LEE & ISA have access to Shmoop! NEISD subscribes to this learning platform on behalf of all teachers and students. Take advantage of a teacher choice opportunity to learn more about Shmoop's curriculum and test prep resources. LEE Librarian Rachel McDevitt and LEE/ISA CCMR Counselor Carin Schramm will co-facilitate a Shmoop teacher training (eligible for teacher choice) on Wednesday, January 19. The training will show teachers how to take advantage of Shmoop features to enhance their instruction and increase engagement. Register now in STRIVE (coming soon).

Podcast Highlights from 2021

What are some of your favorite podcasts from 2021? What podcasts have sustained you this year? What podcasts have you used in the classroom with your students? The LEE Library would love to know how to support teachers (and students) as teachers use podcasts to enhance instruction and facilitate learning for students. Please share your favorite podcasts for use with students or to enhance your instructional practices.
