1st Grade Reading
Little teacher
From the Desk of Mrs. Boyd
The difference, though, between when we learned them, and how children learn now, is the approach. When I started 3rd grade, the teacher had a chart. When you memorized the facts, your name went on the chart and you got an ice cream cone from McDonald's. If you had a hard time learning that 7x9 =63, you just kept saying the numbers over and over until they stuck for the test. I don't remember much about 3rd grade, but I do remember that not everyone in my class got an ice cream cone.
Now, as they work towards fluency, we teach kids how facts are related to one another. 7x9 is 7 less than 7x10, for example. The end goal hasn't changed. Kids still need to learn their facts quickly, as this skill is critical for more advanced math. Our path there has deepened a bit to incorporate understanding, help more kids get to mastery, and develop problem-solvers.

Developing Responsibility--One of our Core Values
When we surveyed families and staff 5 years ago to develop our core values, responsibility rose to the top. We all want our children to learn to be responsible people--people with a good work ethic. At school, we have classroom jobs, ask students to turn in their best work, and to revise it work to make it their best.
One way to develop a good work ethic at home is to teach them to do chores, and to expect them to do them well. Multiple studies have linked adult success with childhood chores. Who knew?
Chores do more than allow kids to earn allowance.
- They help kids feel needed.
- They give them a feeling of importance.
- They help children learn responsibility
- They teach independence.
- They create a work ethic in our children that will help build that character that we want them to have.
- Helps to cut back on entitlement.
- Family chores help kids learn to work together.
- Children learn to help out the family, leaving more time to PLAY as a family. If your children learn to help now, you will have children that will be able to work later, allowing them the ability to work hard and keep a job or work hard to keep their marriage strong. Below is a chart with ideas of age-appropriate chores if you're looking for inspiration. My kids love anything with dishes and weeding. (Must come from their father--those are my least favorites!) Good luck!
Update from Mr. Warneke (Physical Education)
All students have just finished their second fitness testing week and gave great effort. I was proud of how hard they worked! All PE students will be starting floor hockey next. Jump Rope for Heart is off to a great start! Edgewood has already raised $1500.00 in the first week! Still have a whole month to go and our $5000.00 goal is within reach, keep up the great work! The last day to donate will be February 12th. Thanks again for all of your hard work!

Edgewood Home and School Association (our version of PTO)
Thank you to the families, teachers and staff that joined us at our January EHSA meeting. The Edgewood Home and School Association have some fun events and fundraisers planned to finish the 2019-2020 school year strong. We are just $5000 away from our goal- a new school sign for Edgewood.
This digital sign will be visible from Layton Avenue and will serve as a way to communicate information to parents in the car line AND parents traveling down Layton Avenue outside of school hours. Have you seen the whiteboard outside of the office doors with important reminders about early release, no school days, conferences, and other important info? This information will be available via this digital school sign. It will be hard to miss!
So, why the school sign? What will it do for our students? At the beginning of the 2018-2019 school year, EHSA asked Mrs. Boyd and other staff what we could raise money for that would help our students at Edgewood. The school sign idea was brought up, and all agreed that it would help bridge the communication gap. Mrs. Boyd and staff send emails, text messages, facebook messages, and paper flyers home in the Thursday folders and information gets missed. We are all busy, and things get filed, overlooked, and forgotten. This digital school sign would keep that information handy, which would improve student participation in activities during the school day.
Not only that- our current school sign is in need of an update. Edgewood School was updated in summer of 2017. Our school security, classrooms, Learning Commons (library and media center), and gymnasium were updated to better meet the needs of our 21st century learners. Why not update our sign to match those updates.
With that in mind, please consider supporting EHSA through some of our spring events! If you are interested in donating money directly to the EHSA (which is a non-profit organization) we can offer a tax exempt letter. Contact our secretary, Maralee Boston maraleew22@gmail.com for more information.
Save the date:
- Friday, February 7th: 5:30-8:30 Family Fun Night with a movie (free admission) and concessions for purchase
- Tuesday, February 4th: 6:30-7:30 PM EHSA Meeting in Learning Commons (childcare provided)
- Friday, February 28th :4-8 PM Come Spend Leap Day with Edgewood at Sky Zone (up to 35% of purchases will go to EHSA)
- Friday, March 13th: 6:00-8:00 EHSA sponsored St. Patrick’s Day Dance
For the time being, Facebook serves as our digital platform to relay information. Follow “Edgewood Elementary School” for updates from Mrs. Boyd, the school staff, and EHSA. Pictures are posted, web links to Tiger Talk and other information, as well as EHSA events that you can RSVP to and invite others to. If you already follow Edgewood on Facebook, consider inviting other Edgewood parents to follow us too!
