Optional Weekly COVID Testing - Introductory Town Hall Meeting with Grapefruit Health
We are pleased to share that we are partnering with healthcare professionals to provide regular, optional student testing at USD school sites starting mid-September. This new partnership with Grapefruit COVID Testing adds an additional layer in our safety protocols in order to continue to support healthy learning environments in USD.
We will be hosting an online Town Hall meeting with doctors from Grapefruit COVID Testing who will explain the optional COVID-19 testing program that will be available to all Union School District students attending school on campus. Only students whose parents/guardians authorize the testing would participate, and parents will receive secure, same-day results.
Click here or fill out the form below if you are interested in attending.
- A Zoom link will be emailed to all families and posted on the District website prior to the meeting next Wednesday.
- If you are unable to attend the meeting, a recording of it will be available and will be shared with all families.
USD Highlights
Alta Vista After reading several different versions of The Three Pigs, Kindergartners at Alta Vista were tasked with creating their own house for the Pigs that would stand up to some big huffing & puffing (a hair dryer). Students had so much fun while communicating and collaborating with each other to build a strong house. | CarltonAt Carlton Avenue School, students are very happy to be back at school! At lunch recess, students have been busy playing their favorite outdoor games and working in the school garden. During class, students are building relationships and developing a greater awareness of themselves and their peers during daily social emotional learning activities and collaborative projects. | Dartmouth The flexibility of outdoor learning has provided students and staff at Dartmouth with amazing new experiences. Mr. Wright's 8th Grade Science classes brought their physics investigations calculating speed outdoors and measured the speed of passing cars on Blossom Hill Road using student made grids. Mr. Pwu's new outdoor band classroom has transformed the way our students play and hear music. The unique acoustics of a covered hallway and open courtyard have lifted instrument sounds and created a performance space with the feeling of an important venue. Both of these new experiences have energized teachers to look beyond their classroom walls for inspiration and enriched engagement, while our students absolutely love being a part of the fun. |

GuadalupeThe highlight of the opening of the school year at Guadalupe has been the introduction of our new Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) curriculum, Caring School Community. Daily class meetings are focused on building connections between students, creating a community within classrooms and across the school, and resolving any conflicts or concerns. A parent education component will share the "common language" used across the school so that families can reinforce the lessons and also benefit from the program. | Lietz Students at Lietz Elementary excitedly started the year and quickly began filling up their buckets with PAWS tickets. The Lietz PAWS program is based on PBIS (Positive Behavior Interventions and Support) and helps students learn to follow P.A.W.S or Problem Solve, Act Respectfully, make Wise Choices, and Spread Kindness. | Noddin To kick-off the year and with our focus on the Social-Emotional needs of students, Noddin primary teachers have been using Kimochis in the classroom. The Kimochis program (and cute characters!) teaches students how to identify and manage hard-to-have feelings and challenging behaviors. The program will continue throughout the year with regular lessons and "on the spot" help as students need support. |

Oster At Oster Elementary, Transitional Kindergarten students are learning important social-emotional strategies to help get "out of the red zone" and back into the calm and happy "green zone." The Zones of Regulation framework helps to foster self-regulation and emotional control. The TK students in Ms. Yoshioka's class came up with some wonderful ideas together including playing with friends or family and taking deep breaths. | Union Middle WEB (Where Everybody Belongs) Day was held on August 6th at Union Middle School. Over fifty 8th graders participated as WEB leaders and joined Mr. Goldman and Ms. Bombardieri, the WEB coordinators, in welcoming over 300 new-to-UMS students to campus. Students were provided with a first hand account of all things UMS as well as a detailed campus tour, all provided by their WEB leader. It was fantastic to see students back on the UMS campus and starting the school year off on such a positive note. |
