Special Guest Author Visits First Grade
On Monday, November 4th students gathered from Mrs. Lukas' and Miss McGroarty's first grade classes for an "Author's Tea" as they met the author of their mentor texts shared for Writer's Workshop, Mrs. Lukas' daughter, Annalise!
Over the past few weeks the students from the first grade classrooms have been introducing the writing process through the Writer's Workshop program. Mentor texts (sample student-created books) are often used to help students brainstorm ideas for writing, serve as a model for student-created texts by demonstrating various text elements, and motivate the students to write! Annalise is a second grade student who created many books on various topics during her year in first grade. The students have been engaging in mini lessons centered around Annalise's books and were very excited to get the opportunity to meet the author of these books. During this visit, Annalise shared two more self-created books and engaged in a question and answer session where the first grade classes acknowledged "understandings" of her writing and asked questions about her experience as a writer in Writer's Workshop. The students then browsed all of her student-created books over an Author's tea (cookies and juice)! With this, our first graders are ready and excited for all that is to come for them this year in Writer's Workshop!
