I am happy to begin this month’s newsletter declaring that spring has sprung, and it looks like we have turned the corner with nicer weather upon us! With spring comes stages of change, not only with weather and nature but change is coming here in our school district as well. On Tuesday, April 2, at 7:00 PM we will be hosting a Junior High parent and student open house in Des Lacs. During this event, we will discuss the upcoming changes and how it is going to affect the students and staff when the change takes place.
When looking at the upcoming weeks of April, I am often asked to what is the actual date that the junior high students the transition from Burlington to Des Lacs. Our plans begin on Monday, April 8. Students will start their day in Burlington and proceed with their normal morning schedule, eat lunch in Burlington, and then students will be transported by buses to Des Lacs and receive their schedules with their locker assignments. We will also and have an orientation to the Junior High at that time. On Tuesday, April 9, the Junior High Students will begin their day in Burlington, pack their locker and then proceed to get on the busses and come to Des Lacs where they will move into their lockers, eat lunch, have a seventh through twelfth grade assembly and then conclude the day in Des Lacs. Our first full day in Des Lacs with this change will be on Wednesday, April 10th.
Performing these changes with our school and students is a task that is new to all involved and will take some getting used to. So, again I ask for your patience as we smooth out any unforeseen problems and make changes if necessary. The opportunities and the facilities for our students are second to none and I am excited to watch our students grow into this new space!
Finally, this month’s quote comes from the great president John F. Kennedy, “Let us think of education as the means of developing our greatest abilities, because in each of us there is a private hope and dream which, fulfilled, can be translated into benefit for everyone and greater strength of the nation.” One of the goals we have as a school is to provide an education that helps grow our students into becoming productive citizens who lead our nation to become a better place as well!

North Dakota’s First Residential GenCyber Camp NDSU, Fargo
North Dakota State University(NDSU) is partnering with Dakota State University (DSU) to offer North Dakota’s first residential GenCyber camp (building on the success of non-residential camp last summer) for 55 rising high school freshmen through Seniors. This weeklong residential camp will be held from June 24 – 28, 2019 on the NDSU campus in Fargo. This camp is funded and sponsored by the National Security Agency (NSA) and the National Science Foundation (NSF). There is no fee for attending this camp and free lodging, breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks will be provided to the participants during the camp.
The goal of the camp is for students to learn programming, how networks and the Internet works, and how cybersecurity is deeply interwoven into our everyday lives. Our camp curriculum will cover three core areas: Programming, Networking, and Cybersecurity. All students attending the camp will receive a free Raspberry Pi and other necessary hardware/software to participate in the camp activities.
More information on the camp along with a link to pre-registration is available on the following website: gencybernd.com

What are some of the things you love about teaching at DLBHS?
I love …teaching my children and their friends.
…teaching physical science to all freshmen so I have the opportunity to interact with students on a first name basis throughout their high school career.
…the teachers, staff, and administration I work with.
…that I have the resources and support I need to do my job.
What is a goal you have for the school year? My goal is for each student to know that I care about them individually and that I am pleased to invest my best efforts in presenting them with opportunities to acquire the scientific knowledge and skills they need to predict and explain their own observations of the world around them.
What are some of the things you enjoy doing when you aren’t teaching? I enjoy completing projects and caring for cows and chickens with my family on our small farm. I enjoy playing the piano, singing and memorizing Scripture.
Have you always lived in North Dakota? No. I grew up in southern Missouri. I married a Laker alumnus. Once married we slowly moved north from Missouri to Iowa to South Dakota and then moved to Minot in March 2010.

What is a goal you have for the school year? My formal goal for this year was to work on providing a variety of learning opportunities for students so they can find ways to make the content we are covering meaningful to them.
What are you most looking forward to this school year? The building project is sure exciting!
What are some of the things you enjoy doing when you aren’t teaching? I love to be outside -- gardening, walking the dogs, camping, and fishing with my husband, traveling, and spending as much time as possible with my Mom and the rest of my family.
Have you always lived in North Dakota? No. My family moved from St. Paul Minnesota to Fessenden between my sophomore and junior year in high school.
What type of music do you enjoy listening to? I like all sorts of music. We listen to lots of Hawaiian music during class because it helps us think of warmer climates in the winter.
