MI Monthly Newsletter
September
Welcome to your first monthly newsletter! These are you keep you updated in what's happening in our MI class and what we are studying.
Currently we are studying Sue who is a college freshman that has come down sick. She goes to the clinic and sees a lot of her peers with the same symptoms. There is now an outbreak at the college and the kids have to determine who is infected. This last week, we found out that Sue has meningitis and now we need to find out how many of her peers also have meningitis. We will be doing the ELISA test this week to determine which of her peers have it and how the disease spread through the campus. Finally, we have to determine the best way to treat the patients.
When we are deciding on treatments, we learn about antibiotics and how they work. We talk about antibiotic resistant bacteria and how they spread. We even make our own antibiotic resistant bacteria in the lab.
We will end September with our next unit over the ear. We soon find out that Sue has residual hearing loss from her meningitis infection and so we learn about the anatomy of the ear, how hearing works and finally how we diagnose and treat hearing loss.
For our next newsletter, I'll have lots of pictures to show about what we have been up to in class. I hope you have a great month!
