Hope Focus: Kids at Hope Month
"I am Talented, Smart, and Capable of Success"
Happy Kids at Hope Month! While hope should be present in our lives the whole year through, during November we focus on it more intentionally -- what it means and how we can create it.
The second line in the Kids at Hope Pledge is the affirmation, "I am talented, smart, and capable of success." Affirmations are kind things you think and say to yourself that build your confidence. Confidence is believing in yourself, and hope starts with belief--belief in a bright future for yourself and belief in your ability to make it happen. How do you make it happen? By using your talents and smarts!
Talent is a natural aptitude or skill for something--something you are good at from the very beginning. This does not mean that just because you're talented at something you don't have to work hard. Michael Jordan remains one of the most talented basketball players, and even he practiced day in and day out. Talent is a great starting point to figure out where you want your path to lead. It motivates you and gives you something to work towards, both of which create hope.
Smarts is more than earning good grades in school or having a lot of knowledge. Smarts has to do with how you learn, the choices you make, and how you interact with others.
- When you are "smart," you are an active participant in your learning. You understand how you learn best, ask for help when you need it, set goals for yourself, persevere when it gets challenging, and reflect on your learning.
- When you are "smart," you know that every choice you make matters. You make choices that lead you to success--getting enough sleep, eating healthy, exercising, studying, and hanging around people who are responsible, respectful, and bring out the best in you.
- When you are "smart," you interact with others in ways that are empathetic, respectful, and cooperative. You know that your way of thinking isn't the only way of thinking, so you work to understand other perspectives. You see the world beyond yourself and seek out the strengths and creativity of others so that you can all work together towards one common goal. Value and respect is reciprocated.
Using your smarts means you keep growing and learning from yourself and others, giving to this world in ways that are compassionate. Wherever you find growth and compassion, you will also find hope.
As we venture through November, how can you use your talents and smarts to create hope in your life and in the lives of those around you?

SHARE YOUR HOPE TODAY!
All Christensen students have a chance to have their artwork featured in the monthly "Hopeful Happenings" newsletter. Students create a drawing, painting, or writing that expresses hope and turn it into Mrs. Roppo. All entries will be featured in this newsletter throughout the school year.
Video of the Month: Honoring Our U.S. Veterans
We are grateful for the military men and women who serve to protect our country. Because of you, we can follow our dreams and live lives full of hope. Thank you, Veterans!

CHARACTER TRAIT OF THE MONTH
November: Gratitude
Have you shown gratitude by:
- noticing the good things around you?
- showing appreciation to others for the ways they bring joy to your life?
- bringing joy and kindness to other people?
- helping others when they need it, as others have helped you when you needed it?
- cherishing the people you love and treating the things you have with respect?
