Defintions
Conservation- restoration from loss, neglect, or damage.
Preservation- to maintain in safety; keep in an unaltered condition.
Red Wolves
- Red Wolves were almost hunted to extinction. In 1980 very few Red Wolves were taken into captivity to be bred and kept in captivity to try and restore the population.
- In 2007, there were 207 captive Red Wolves in 38 breeding facilities. There were 100 out in the wild. The number of wolves have risen since then.
- Red Wolves are mostly nocturnal, and hunt in very small packs. They communicate with scent, vocalizations, facial expressions, and body posture.
How is the Red Wolf population being preserved?
The Red Wolf population is being preserved in breeding facilities located around the country. The population is being built back up to it's former state. The population also had to be conserved from the beginning, since this particular species came so close to extinction.
