April 2019
Center Aim
-Scott Loehr
Everyday teachers mold the future. Teachers foster creativity, develop character and provide students with the skills they need to reach their full potential and lead productive lives. Teachers, administrators, support staff experience incredible joy in celebrating the accomplishments of students and spring is that time of year when we recognize such achievements.
As we continue with the implementation of the CJUSD Local Control Accountability Plan (LCAP), I am proud to share that we are making significant progress in attaining the goals we have established. Through the annual update process, will look at data, review the progress our district has made and revise goals as needed to meet the educational needs of our students. Annual update discussions with all stakeholders will happen throughout the district in April and May.
California’s academic standards are designed so students graduate ready for college and a career. One way we measure their progress is through the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP) assessments. Students across California in grades 3–8 and high school take these assessments each spring. These tests were created specifically to gauge each student’s performance in English language arts/literacy (ELA), mathematics, and science. These tests measure the skills called for by the academic standards, including the ability to write clearly, think critically, and solve problems.
A new addition to our elementary professional development program is a partnership with the Math Department of the Sacramento County Office of Education. Representatives from each elementary site were chosen to be a part of a group of educators who have dug deeper in the CA math framework and curriculum to collaborate on ways to present critical components of grade level math standards to their students in a highly engaging and problem solving way. Cadre members have explored strategies like Number Talks, struggle problems and open middle problems.
Transitional Kindergarten is a program that provides a year of early education to help children develop the skills they need to succeed in kindergarten. The program is not a substitution for kindergarten. Rather, is the first of a two year program to ensure that students are developmentally and academically prepared for first grade. Children eligible for Transitional Kindergarten must have a birthday between Sept 2, 2014 and Dec 2, 2014. If your child's birthday falls within the appropriate range and you would like more information about the Transitional Kindergarten programs please contact North Country Elementary at 338-6480, Oak Hill Elementary at 338-6460 or Dudley Elementary at 338-6470.

CHS Recognizes Top Scholars
The Top Ten Dinner is an academic recognition steeped in tradition at Center High School. It’s an honor bestowed upon seniors whose grade point average (gpa) is the top ten of their graduating class. First held in 1989, The Top Ten was the vision of former CHS Principal, Claude Brock.
District and school administrators, teaching staff and proud families attended the Top Ten Dinner on March 27th to recognize the Top Ten Honorees for the Class of 2019. Each Top Ten student was introduced by a selected teacher or staff member that has had an impact on the student’s high school experience. Students were invited to give a speech, reflecting on their time at Center High School and their post high school goals and aspirations.
The Top Ten Dinner has become one of the most valued and long standing traditions at Center High School. Congratulations to the following 2019 Center High School graduates for their academic excellence.

Verenice is most looking forward to being independent and sees this journey as an opportunity for tremendous growth. Looking ahead, Verenice shared, "I want to devote my career to service. I’m constantly learning how to become a better leader and gaining the knowledge necessary to be effective and shape my opinions, and during college and beyond I seek to apply this knowledge and gain experience. I am excited at the prospect of being a leader and changing the world someday."

Thank a Bus Driver TODAY!
-Cyndy Mitchell
CJUSD Transportation Supervisor
April 23, 2019 is California’s School Bus Driver Appreciation Day!!!!
Each year in April California recognizes the hard work our School Bus Driver’s do each day to ensure students have a safe ride as well as starting them off with a positive beginning and ending to their day.
This year C.J.U.S.D.’s annual recognition includes: School’s involving the students who ride the buses by creating artwork for the drivers (cards, letters) or placing signs on school buildings along with posting on school’s marquees. The Transportation Dept. offers a breakfast/lunch while playing a “game” giving out the many gifts donated by our local businesses. All of this makes driver’s feel a sense of teamwork and pride within our district making for a great place to work.
We all know what it feels like to be appreciated when sometimes our jobs seem so routine, so I wanted to take this opportunity to thank all who continue to participate in making our annual bus driver’s day special and appreciated.
Your annual donations have helped bring this community together by showing your support for our Transportation Department at CJUSD.
Thank you: Chicken n’ Ribs, Tractor Supply, Yogurt Time, Les Swabb, Bel Air, Auto Zone, Quick Quack, Perko’s, O’Reilly, Hair and Facial and Togo’s/Baskin Robbins.

Spinelli Happenings
-Erica Olmstead
“It takes a village to raise a child” is a phrase often used to describe the many people involved in creating kind and responsible citizens in our varied world. This month, the ‘village’ of our students was invited to share lunch with their child and get a preview of the book faire located on campus. Many grandparents, aunts, uncles, moms, dads and others came to Spinelli to strengthen the relationship between home and school. We appreciate all the efforts our families put into supporting their students!
Speaking of the village, Spinelli teachers and parents are excited to announce that the Parent Teacher Organization will be back at Spinelli and in full swing for the 2019-2020 school year. Congratulations to our newly elected officers: Maria Rademacher-President, Sarah Prince-Vice President, Tiffany Weaver-Treasurer, and Larisa Snyder-Secretary.
In honor of Dr. Suess’ birthday on March 2nd, volunteers from the United Way visited our school to read a book to each class in our Read Across America event. Each class had a well-dressed volunteer visit, read a book, and then donated the book to the classroom when finished! It was fun and exciting.
Third and fourth graders were lucky to attend a field trip at the Aerospace Museum of California this month. Students were able to explore the possibilities of air and space travel with hands on STEM activities and challenges. In addition, the students were able to explore real aircraft AND the outstanding privilege of discussing the aircraft with retired pilots.
With the help of North Highlands Park and Recreation District and a grant from Raley's, Spinelli will have a community garden space! After volunteers from NHPR help in setting up the space, Spinelli students will work in the garden to care for it. Any items produced in the garden will be used for students and any unused produce will be available to the community. It's a win-win for everyone involved!
Behind Spinelli Elementary school (running along Watt Avenue) is an open space that has been previously unused. North Highlands Park and Recreation District is in the process of changing the space to a park for community use. To obtain more information about Sierra Creek Park, please come to Spinelli’s multi-purpose room at 6:00 PM on April 23.
