Athletics Update February 2022
High School Swim: Swim team currently has 20 active swimmers, 18 that competed at the district meet and 2 that were not cleared due to covid. Swim team just competed at the District 30-5A Meet in Corpus on Saturday. We have a total of 11 swimmers that qualified for the regional meet. We had one of our best meets this weekend with the kids all getting personal records in every event swam.
Boys Collin Crisman, Emerico Perez, Jaden Molina, and Omar Zarate qualified in the medley relay placing 3rd and the 200 Freestyle relay placing 2nd. Collin, Jaden and Emerico also qualified in their individual events as top 6 were able to move on. Emerico Perez placed 1st in the 200 IM, and 3rd in the 100 Breaststroke. Jaden Molina placed 5th in the 50 Free and 4th in the 100 Freestyle. Collin Crisman placed 6th in the 50 Freestyle. Zander Urrutia, Asher Springs, Oscar Lallana, Omar Zarate also qualified in their 400 Freestyle relay placing 5th.
On our girls team, Bria Escobar, Jade Garcia, Caitlynn Rubio, and Suzanna Jiminian made it on all 3 relays placing 5th.
We will be swimming at the regional meet Friday and Saturday with a pretty good chance of moving forward to the State Meet.
High School Girls Basketball: The Lady Coyotes started their second round of district play last Tuesday, January 25th. The Lady Coyotes are currently sitting in 4th place in their district, after beating Zapata 57-29. They are battling hard every game and hoping to have a Playoff run this season. We have two big games this week, we face Kingsville on Tuesday and Calallen on Friday both at 6:15 pm.
High School Boys Basketball: Alice Coyote Basketball has been rolling with district games taking place. Leading the way for the Coyotes are Seniors Ryan Salas and Jose Vivanco along with Freshmen Ale Asevedo and Junior Alejandro Vasquez. We currently lead the District in many categories and are excited about the 2nd round!
We start the 2nd round of district play tomorrow Tuesday 2/1/2022 vs. Undefeated Kingsville at home and we also have another home game Friday 2/4/2022 vs. Calallen.
Friday 2/4/2022 vs Calallen will be our WHITE OUT GAME and WE HOPE THAT EVERYONE WILL BE IN ATTENDANCE, as we are hoping to see a record breaking crowd, PLEASE WEAR WHITE!!!
We are currently 13 -12 overall, and 3-2 in District Play. With a 2nd place standing Go Coyotes!
High School Golf: Varsity Boys Golf placed 4th overall as a team in the Victoria Invitational out of 11 Varsity Teams. Oscar Pena was 4th and Ricardo Gonzalez tied for 12th overall. Coach Canales was very pleased and mentioned the boys are getting better each week. The JV Teams play at River Hills and placed 3rd in the girls division. We competed very well in the Alice Invitational that was held Monday January 31st. It was good for our golfers to play the district course against many of the teams that we will see in district play. We are very young this year on both the girls and boys side but are hoping to continue to improve and play well enough at the district tournament to advance a team or medalist to the regional golf tournament.
Girls Soccer: The Lady Coyote Soccer team finished their preseason with the Tuloso-Midway tournament where they won consolation. The Lady Coyotes were hit with some injuries and illnesses that kept nine players out. The team had to postpone the District match against Tuloso- Midway. They did play the soccer match against Ingleside where they came up on the losing side by a score of 6 – 5. The girls were playing with several Varsity players out but those slots were filled in by JV Players. The ladies did a fantastic job of not giving up and playing until the last second. The Lady Coyotes will make up a match on 1/31/22 against TM and will play Santa Gertrudis Academy on 2/4/22.
Boys Soccer: The boys’ soccer district season is off to a great start. Both JV and varsity squads are unbeaten and District play. This week the varsity boys will host London and SGA while the JV squad will be home v. London and then host the 1st annual Alice JV soccer tournament (February 3 and 5). The boys are continuing to be competitive and are determined to win the district title at both levels. Go Coyotes!
High School Powerlifting: The 2022 Alice Power Lifting season is going strong. We have over 50 kids who come and lift with us after school, although many of them don’t have any desire to lift in meets. We had a JV only meet in Bishop on the 13th. We took 16 kids with zero experience and competed well. Last Saturday, we had our 1st Varsity meet in TM. We took 16 different kids and they all did great. Alaura Gonzalez and Michael Contreras both won their weight divisions. Nik Garza, Madison DeLeon, and Aiden Wilde all medaled also with 4th place finishes.
High School Tennis: We are starting our spring season for the Tennis Team. For Spring it's different from Fall Tennis, in spring we play individual, doubles or mixed tourneys. We have played two tournaments so far. My Jv team took 1st place team trophy, and 9 athletes took home individual medals at the West Oso tourney that took place in CC at Al Kruse Tennis Center on Jan 17th. The Varsity won and lost some tough matches but didn't place at the West Oso tourney. I took 6 athletes to the Tuloso Midway Tourney on Jan 28th at TM, we didn’t place but we were guaranteed 4 matches and my Varsity won 1 or 2 matches out of the 4. Next up, we have the Rockport Tourney coming up on February 11th where I will be taking 12 athletes. We have the Kingsville tourney March 1st for Jv and March 4th for the Varsity. To finish our schedule, we have Tuloso Midway Jv and at the end of March we have our Varsity and Jv District, that will be March 28th for Jv and March 30-31 for the Varsity in Zapata. I have noticed that my number of athletes vary from tourney to the next because of the other sports that they are in season. I hope when their season in their sports ends I will be getting my returning players back playing. But, on my roster I have 19 players right now. Thank you to the school board, you are much appreciated.
High School Softball: The Lady Coyotes had their first practice January 14th and have 30 girls in the program. The girls have been working hard day in and day out to get ready for the season. This past weekend, the varsity Lady Coyotes hosted London and Laredo LBJ in a tri-scrimmage. We beat London 3-0, and freshmen Cristela Trevino had a 2 run homerun in her first at bat. We also tied 1-1 with Laredo LBJ. The Lady Coyotes had bases loaded with one out and the top of our line up was up to bat when time had expired. Junior, Ava Hernandez, and freshman, Brooke Castillo, pitched for the Lady Coyotes and did a tremendous job in the circle. Overall, the lady coyotes look solid on defense and offense. Next up for the JV and Varsity teams is Laredo United South on Wednesday Feb. 2 at their place.
High School Track: Official 1st day of track practice was January 18th. We have a good amount of varsity returners who are ready to have another successful season. Our season opener will be February 12th in GP. Our Annual Hub City Relays will be taking place on April 1st.
Middle School Girls: JH girls’ basketball will wrap up on Thursday, Feb 3rd. Our 7th grade A team has done very well this season with a record of 9-2 for the season and 6-1 for district with one game left to play. All the teams have grown and improved skills this season along with lessons learned, teamwork, sportsmanship, and what it means to be a Lady Coyote.
Our JH track season will kick off on Feb 24th in Gregory Portland and in Alice on March 3rd. We are looking forward to a great Track Season.
