Russian History

Russia has been known throughout history for their role in World War 1 and 2 as well as their constant conflict with Ukraine. Over time they have been known as a predominant communist country. They have been ruled by cruel dictators such as Vladimir Lenin, Joseph Stalin, and Nikita Khrushchev. They are often considered an untrustworthy ally, especially after their role in the Cuban Missile Crisis, which nearly started a war. Russia was formerly known as the Soviet Union (U.S.S.R) until it fell in 1991. It then took on the name Russia, which derived from a group of people called the Rus'. Since the fall of the Soviet Union, the economy has greatly improved and they have recently elected Vladimir Putin as the president.

Population

Russia's population currently stands at 142,470,272. Despite being the largest country in the world, Russia has a very low population density when compared to smaller countries like India or the United States.

Ethnic Groups

Russia is mostly made up of Russians at 78% and Tatar at 4%. The other 18% is made up of over 190 different ethnic groups.

Languages

Russian is the official language of Russia at 96%, while other languages such as Dolgang (5%) and Tatar (3%).

Religion

Russia is 18% Russian Orthodox and 13% Muslim. Russia has the largest number of non-practicing believers and non-believers, partly due to Soviet rule.

Literacy

Russia is at 99% literacy rate, which shows how well developed and educated the country is.

Life Expectancy

Russia has a male life expectancy of 64 years, while women have an average of 76 years. Compared to most well developed countries, the life expectancy is low, which may be because of poor sanitation and health care.

Obesity

Russia is at 26% obesity, which is low compared to the United Sates. According to reports, after banning food imports from the United States and Europe, their obesity rate dropped significantly.

Health Expenditures

6% of Russia's GDP is used for medical and health purposes. This is relatively average, but compared to the United States, it is quite low. Being a communist country, most of the GDP is used towards building a strong military and defense system.

Death Rate

Russia has a death rate of 14 deaths for every 1000 people, which is one of the highest is the world.

Russia just about breaks even when is comes to growth rate only declining each year by 0.03%.

Food

Food such as soup, porridge, meat, fish, bread, kotlety, and potatoes have always been a big part of the Russian cuisine. You will not find many American products in the area considering that they banned food imports from the United States.

Clothing

Traditional Russian clothing is usually white and red with various patterns and gold embroidery. The clothing draped down like a cloak and used many different types of fabric. Not many people were this style of clothing today, but it is still considered a large part of the Russian culture.
