From the Student Support Counselor
Parents,
Next week kicks off Centennial’s Red Ribbon Week. Due to our Homecoming festivities this week, we pushed it back in an effort to separate the two events and in the hopes that it would be more impactful for the students.
My challenge to the students next week and in the future is to find their natural high. Students will have the opportunity to view videos of music groups, pro athletes, photographers, artists, dancers, etc. talking about what gives them their natural high and why they have never sought out the artificial high drugs can bring them. I challenge you as the parents to engage your kids in the conversation about what gives them their natural high. What are their interests? What are their short and long-term goals for themselves? What do they want to do post-graduation? This may open up the door for a talk about how drugs can get in the way of those interests, goals, and aspirations. You can go to naturalhigh.org and check out all their resources.
This week, I would like to focus on marijuana. There are many myths out there about this drug and since it’s use is on the rise in today’s teens, it’s a great place to get started.
Did you know?
● Drug poisoning is the leading cause of injury deaths in the US, ahead of firearms, automobile crashes, suicide, and homicide.
● Marijuana smoke contains 50 to 70 percent more cancer-causing chemicals than tobacco smoke. THC affects a part of the brain called the hippocampus, which is critical for processing and storing new information, making it difficult to learn.
● THC ( the main active ingredient in marijuana) affects attention, impairing your ability to do complex tasks that require focus and concentration. These effects can last even after the high is long gone, especially for frequent users of marijuana, and that can make it harder for them to do well in school.
● THC also affects parts of the brain that control timing, movement, and coordination. This not only diminishes athletic performance, but also puts you at risk for serious injury.
● Drugged driving is dangerous, illegal, and happening more and more. The risk of being in an accident doubles after marijuana use.
● The skills you need to drive safely—alertness, concentration, coordination, judgment, and reaction time—are controlled by the parts of your brain affected by THC. This means that smoking marijuana seriously increases the likelihood of a car accident.
● Long-term, regular use of marijuana—starting in the teen years—may impair brain development and lower IQ, meaning the brain may not reach its full potential.
● The honey-like resin from the marijuana plant has 3 to 5 times more THC than the plant itself. Smoking it (also called “dabbing”) can lead to dangerous levels of intoxication requiring emergency treatment.
● Spice, also known as K2, is not fake marijuana. In fact, some effects of Spice are much more intense than those of marijuana and have even been linked to deaths.
Encourage your kids to get the facts. Many teens think marijuana is safe and non-addictive and will not lead to use of other illegal drugs. Scientific research is saying just the opposite.
As always, I am just a phone call or e-mail away. Reach out with concerns or questions.
