Please call the office at 972-347-3700 to let your child's teacher know your child will be absent from school that day. Your child’s academic success is very important to us. In order for that to happen, his/her attendance in class is extremely important. We wanted to make sure everyone is aware of the attendance policy, as the state law is very clear on which absences are excused.
The following is a district-approved list of approved absence reasons with the proper documentation for elementary students:
- medical illness
- board approved extracurricular activities
- medicals appointments, screenings and similar matters
- juvenile or other court preceding
- absences required by state or local welfare authorities
- death and or serious illness of an immediate family member (with documentation)
- religious holy days
- family emergencies (approved by administrator)
- weather and road conditions that make traveling dangerous
- deployment of immediate family members
All other absences, unless approved by an administrator, will be unexcused. Failure to turn in a handwritten note or send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org school within 72 hours of the absence will result in an unverified absence. Regardless of the reason, documentation is required for every absence.
A student is counted tardy if he/she is not in the classroom when the tardy bell rings (7:50 a.m. for Denton ISD elementary schools). Excessive tardiness may become a matter for the attendance officers. These are considered Loss of Significant Instructional Time (LOSIT) and can be addressed by the court the same as unexcused absences. Leaving school early (being signed out prior to dismissal) is also considered a LOSIT. If a child must leave early due to a medical/dental appt, please bring in the note from the doctor so it can be excused.
According to the Compulsory Attendance Law, an accumulation of 10 unexcused absences or LOSIT's in a six-month period may result in possible truancy court action.
Denton ISD policy states that a handwritten note or email sent to email@example.com must be received within 72 hours of the child returning to school in order to excuse an absence as long as it meets the excused criteria, even if you called the attendance line. (The call is to let the teacher know not to expect your child in class that day; the note is for proper documentation.) Please see the student code of conduct for complete details. Make sure the note has your child's full name, dates of the absences, reason for the absence, and your signature and date. If a handwritten note or email sent to firstname.lastname@example.org is received after 72 hours the absence will be considered unexcused. Please call our office if you have any questions.
