Clyde Ross

Clyde Ross was born in 1923. He is the seventh child out of thirteen children. He lived near Clarksdale, Mississippi. Him and his family lived on a forty-acre farm with cows, hogs, and mules. When Clyde Ross was still a child, Mississippi authorities claimed his father owed $3,000 in back taxes. The elder Ross could not read. He did not have a lawyer. He did not know anyone at the local courthouse. The authorities seized the land. They seized the buggy. They took the cows, hogs, and mules. So, for the upkeep of separate but equal, the entire Ross family was reduced to sharecropping. If cotton was selling for 50 cents a pound, the Ross family might get 15 cents, or only five.

One year Clyde's mother promised to buy him a $7 suit for a summer program at their church. She ordered the suit by mail. But that year Clyde’s family was paid only five cents a pound for cotton. The mailman arrived with the suit. The Ross's could not pay. The suit was sent back. Clyde Ross did not go to the church program.

Poppy and Shannon

The puppy’s name is Poppy and the master’s name is Shannon. Shannon has seizures and her puppy, Poppy alerts her 15-20 minutes before she has a seizure. Shannon was laying on a bed and Poppy was licking Shannon to alert her that she is having a seizure. If she even twitches Poppy will bark. If Shannon didn’t have Poppy to alert her about seizures then she would die of choking on her vomit and saliva.

  • One reason why the video is similar to Sounder. Shannon was protected by Poppy because he licks her when she has a seizure. Sounder protected his master when he got arrested by the sheriff. Second reason is, Shannon needs Poppy to alert her about her seizures. The father needed Sounder for hunting in the dark. Another reason is, Sounder would whine when he needed something. Poppy alerts Shannon about her seizures so, Shannon doesn't choke on vomit or saliva.
