Oakhurst Elementary

From the Principal
Dear Oakhurst Parents,
Happy New Year. I write today with a saddened heart regarding yesterday's occurrences in our nation's capital. I am sure many of you share those same sentiments. I sat in utter shock and disappointment as we watched mayhem unfold on television. It is important that we immediately unpack and intentionally address this event and all other occurrences that further demoralize us as a people. As a black woman, these feelings of upset plague me far too often. While the thought of addressing such issues with young children can be daunting, we must realize our children are watching. If not witnessing the actual events, they are aware of the impact current events might have on you as parents or their teachers. I want to share some resources that might help to guide you in conversations with your children around such happenings. It is my belief that we have a responsibility to create space for dialogue (with even our youngest children), perhaps refraining from sharing the intricate details of such events but intentionally teaching them about social justice, respect, acceptance, empathy, racism, tolerance, etc. Along these lines, I want to share that our equity team has recently adjusted our crew plans to include more content to support our equity work. At school, we are hoping to slowly and appropriately introduce our students to themes such as racial equality, social justice, and much more. We began our new crew lessons this week. We will share more about this work in the coming weeks!

Returning to In-Person Update
This week we worked to finalize our class rosters and communicate with groups of parents. Next week you can expect to learn who your child's teacher will be. If your child has been reassigned to a different teacher, expect to receive some form of welcome communication from the teacher. We will continue to add to our "Reopening" tab on our website in the coming week. Please check there often for more updates/details.
Daily Schedules for virtual and in-person schedules
Beginning January 19th, the schedule for both groups of students (virtual and in-person) will be as follows:
Flybrary
Flybrary Information/Survey
Flybrary book pickup will be available during next Wednesday's Flybrary (1/ 13) from 11 - 12
If your child will continue in the Virtual Learning setting after 1/19, please complete the survey by Friday, 1/8. We will create a new Flybrary pickup schedule based on what works best for most families.
Beginning the week of 1/19, book check outs will still be available to all students (whether in person or virtual). We will deliver books to in-person students while they are in the building. Families with virtual students will continue to pick books up via Flybrary. Please stay tuned for an updated in-person library day and Flybrary drive through days/times.
Book Bundles
Book Bundles are back! If you'd like your child to check out books from the library but aren't sure what to choose, we'll curate a custom book bundle based on the preferences you indicate on this form: Book Bundle New User Form
If your family has already been using Book Bundles, please use this form: Book Bundle Repeat Patron Form
Book Bundles (along with regular checkouts) will be available for pick up during next Wednesday's Flybrary (1/ 13) from 11 - 12. Please drive through alongside the school (enter from Feld) and remain in your car. You may also walk or bike. *This is also when you return library books.*
