David G. Burnet served as a state legislator, Supreme Court judge, and United States senator. He also was honored for intellectual achievements, including history of Ohio territory. At age 29, Burnet was expected to die of a lung ailment. Seeking a cure he went to the gentler climate of Louisiana where his health improved. Burnet and the cabinet established the Treaty of Velasco, "Santa Anna dead is no more than, Tom, Dick, or Harry dead, but living, he may avail Texas much."
