Political Experience
Jefferson served as the second governor of Virginia from 1779 to 1781. Jefferson also served as a minister to France, beginning in 1785, with his duties consisting primarily of negotiating loans and trade agreements with private citizens and government officials in Paris and Amsterdam. Jefferson returned to America in November of 1789 with news of George Washington being elected president, and that he was appointing Jefferson as his Secretary of State. While in this position Jefferson formed the Democratic-Republican political party, which promoted the supremacy of state government. Currently he is our Vice-President to John Adams.
