Curriculum Updates
Happy Friday!
This week in math, we learned to solve one and two step word problems with addition and subtraction using the strategies we've learned. Give your child a simple word problem such as "Sally had 24 crayons on Monday. She lost 11 crayons. How many crayons did she have at the end of the week?" Have your child solve this using their strategies.
In reading, we began exploring the difference between fiction and nonfiction. We also learned about text features that we might see in a book, such as titles, photographs, captions, etc. We had a successful fourth week of guided reading. Please make sure your child is practicing reading at home every night. Your child should be coming home every night with a guided reading folder.
In writing, we are continuing to focus on meaningful writing. We learned how to add more descriptive words to our writing to improve its meaning. We also continued to practice emulating the writing method of another author and apply it to our own writing.
This week in spelling we spent time identifying words that have two syllables with double consonants. Our seventh spelling test was today. Even though your child will be bringing home an editing test it will not be graded as of yet. The list will always be sent home on a Mondays and we will have our tests on Fridays. Spelling lists are also available on our second grade website. Just a reminder, they will not be penalized for the challenge words if they are missed. If they get them correct they can add on a point for each. On the 8th week of spelling we will be reviewing the previous 7 spelling lists worth of words. There will be no spelling test next week.
In Science we work on the differences between physical properties and matter. We got to play a new app called Kahoots.

Iowa TESTING – During the mornings of November 7th, 8th, and 9th, all second graders in FISD will take the Iowa Assessment. Please schedule morning appointments on days other than Iowa testing. The Iowa Assessment gives teachers and parents a snapshot of how students perform the basic skills of vocabulary, language arts, reading, listening, and math, as compared to other second graders in the nation. Please be sure your awesome second grader has a good night’s sleep and a healthy breakfast on these days. Please encourage your child with a hug, a reminder to listen carefully the first time, and to do their “Personal Best” on the test. It’s an opportunity to ‘Show What You Know!’ For more information, please visithttp://www.riversidepublishing.com.
