From Australia to Pozo Alcón
By Celeste Alva
My first taste of Spain, and in fact Europe, was Granada. Although I arrived at midnight after almost 48 hours of travel, I was utterly enchanted by the city. I felt as thought I had stepped into a movie - wandering along the quiet streets lined by beautiful old buildings illuminated by antique lamps.
I met Ana, the head of studies, a few days later in Granada, calling her from a pay phone as I didn't have a SIM card yet. I sat with her and her friends at a restaurant in Granada and tried unsuccessfully to catch snippets of their conversation. I couldn't understand a single word. I had studied a beginners Spanish class at university the previous year, but I was at ground zero and it was starting to sink in.
Leaving sunny Granada behind, Ana drove me to Pozo Alcon, the pueblo where I would be living for the next 8 months. I remember being unable to pronounce both the name of the village and the province of Jaen and Ana's subtle warnings of the size, weather and remote location. Still, I was unprepared. Of course I was. I was a 22 year old Australian, traveling to Europe for the first time. I couldn't speak or understand Spanish. I had never lived away from home, or alone. Also, I wasn't a teacher and had had little contact with children in the past. !Bienvenido a Pozo Alcon¡ Ana said cheerily, as we drove through the sea of olive trees to my new home.
No sabía hablar o entender español.
I moved into an apartment the next day and started work at the college and institute the next week. I also began private English lessons in my house, at the request of some of the parents. I joined Javi's gym and had English and Spanish conversation practice a few times a week. I was surprisingly busy as I settled into my new way of life.
I taught 4 hours at the college and 11 hours in the institute weekly. Although I felt awkward in the beginning, I quickly came to love the kids cuddles and laughs in the college. The constant games of charades we would play just to get a simple message across. Their intense stares, hungry for knowledge, eager to know what it was I was saying whenever I spoke in English. They often looked at me as though I was from another planet. I think this is one of the wonderful things to be gained from the program, not only improved English language skills but a general awareness of other countries and cultures. I sang heads, shoulders, knees and toes countless times, drew all sorts of funny pictures on the blackboard and played many games during my time in there.
Although it was difficult and isolating at times, especially as I couldn't speak Spanish, I have enjoyed my time in Pozo Alcon. I believe I have been able to learn more Spanish living in a pueblo, than if I had lived in a city with other foreigners. I have chosen not to renew for another year as I am ready to return to Australia to begin my career in environmental engineering. If I were to renew, I would elect a city, with more services and better transport and connections within the country and the rest of Europe.
